I'm with Ed. Very sage advise. Plus ... I'm wondering why you want an X model. True, you live in Va and true, it does snow there. But an AWD car is less efficient, rides stiffer, and is more expensive to repair after 100k miles. Why give all that up just for a couple of snow days? I assume the roads are cleared within a day or so after each snow. In 2008, the M upgraded the HR 3.5 dual intake engine and a 7 speed gearbox. Not like the performance of the 4.5 or 5.6 engines to be sure, but the HR engine and the bigger gearbox makes for better performance and higher mpg than the 2006 & 2007 models. My 2009 gets about 25 mpg on road trips and about 14 mpg in congested driving. Plus, the 2008 - 2010 model has the beautiful neon-blue-white dash colors insteads of orange. My 2009 has the $9,000 'premium package' (not even an option after 2010) that includes all other packages plus reclining temp rear seats, A/V controls in the rear armrest, sunshade, and a TV screen that folds down from the ceiling. At 105k miles, in pristine condition, It's worth maybe 10-12,000 dollars. I recommend you look for a 2008 - 2010 with 100k miles AND properly documented maintenance. You will get lots more kit and you still have the larger body. In 2011 when the sedans were shrunk by a couple of inches in length and width.
Also, you won't have the latest tech - no parking sensors and non surround camera. I can park without sensors and the surround camera is only slightly more than a gimmick in my opinion. It uses the HD based NAV which has not been updated since 2011, but mine has never failed to get me anywhere I need to go and there are other NAV options if you're concerned.
