Hello everyone. I thinking about buying a 2006 M35x with 97K miles. The dealer is asking for 10K for the car. What are the pros and cons about buying a 13 year old car? The mileage is good, but I'm concern about the possibility may be sitting for a long time. Any recommendations?
Ps. I live in VA and the dealer is in GA. Is is worth making that road trip to check it out?

Be cautious in your purchase, I purchased an 06 M35x in Nov. of 17 and it went dead on me in Jun 18. It is a third vehicle for me, meaning I didn't drive it often. I think I put maybe.....4k miles on it. I sent it to the dealer because of electrical issues and come to find out that the IPDM , BCM and Engine harness are bad (Ask the dealer of the history of those components). Please make sure you get an extended warranty (which I didn't but should have). I don't want anyone to go through what I did. Besides that issue it is a lovely car!!!!! I'm in the DMV area.

I don't think the road trip is worth it to check it out. Unless there really aren't that many M35s around you with the same mileage.
I would only bother with such a distance, for such a price if it was the premium model (reclining rear seats, etc).

I get the feeling that your priority at this moment is mileage. 97k isn't dramatically low, but yes, we have probably crossed the point where failure/repair will be due to age rather than mileage.
Suspension might need a refresh, just like a car with 180k miles. Otherwise, the other things to look at should be normal maintenance items: brakes, fluids, belts etc.

The only con I see is that in today's world, a 13 year old car will feel like it has 20 year old tech.

I'm with Ed. Very sage advise. Plus ... I'm wondering why you want an X model. True, you live in Va and true, it does snow there. But an AWD car is less efficient, rides stiffer, and is more expensive to repair after 100k miles. Why give all that up just for a couple of snow days? I assume the roads are cleared within a day or so after each snow. In 2008, the M upgraded the HR 3.5 dual intake engine and a 7 speed gearbox. Not like the performance of the 4.5 or 5.6 engines to be sure, but the HR engine and the bigger gearbox makes for better performance and higher mpg than the 2006 & 2007 models. My 2009 gets about 25 mpg on road trips and about 14 mpg in congested driving. Plus, the 2008 - 2010 model has the beautiful neon-blue-white dash colors insteads of orange. My 2009 has the $9,000 'premium package' (not even an option after 2010) that includes all other packages plus reclining temp rear seats, A/V controls in the rear armrest, sunshade, and a TV screen that folds down from the ceiling. At 105k miles, in pristine condition, It's worth maybe 10-12,000 dollars. I recommend you look for a 2008 - 2010 with 100k miles AND properly documented maintenance. You will get lots more kit and you still have the larger body. In 2011 when the sedans were shrunk by a couple of inches in length and width.
Also, you won't have the latest tech - no parking sensors and non surround camera. I can park without sensors and the surround camera is only slightly more than a gimmick in my opinion. It uses the HD based NAV which has not been updated since 2011, but mine has never failed to get me anywhere I need to go and there are other NAV options if you're concerned.

That distance is a little extreme for the price and actually it is quite a distance for that vehicle. I'm sure you can a better deal closer to you.

Thanks for all of the useful information. Upon reading the responses, I decided NOT to move forward with that vehicle in GA. My new search will be a 2008 or higher M35 in this area. I will keep you guys informed if I find something. Thanks again!!!!!!

Larz, are you sure about that? I thought the 7 speed transmission only came along with the 3.7 V6. My 2008 M35X has the 3.5 and 5 speed. Otherwise, great post about a great vehicle!

09-10 have the 7-speed mated to the 3.5 HR. Id prefer that setup to the V8 honestly

Well, Larz is correct about his RWD as you are about your AWD; but I'd like to add a little more detail to it to bring it together.
  • The V6 engine changed in 2009 along with the transmission*
  • Only the RWD V6 got the 7 speed in 2009
  • All AWDs retained the 5 speed transmission.
  • All V8s used the same engine with a 5 speed trans
  • The AWD V8 was only offered from 2008
Here is something I drafted to help visualize the drivetrain changes throughout the generation.

Orange interior lights and a 5 speed transmission are my biggest gripes with my M45 :poke:

I'd be willing to part with my 2009 M35x for the right number. I LOVE the car, but I really need something that I won't care if it gets beat up in Chicago, and this thing is too nice. Just over 50k miles. (I think 50,5xx right now).

A 2009 with such low mileage is a great find for anyone looking. I suggest that you post it in the sale area here. It will be seen by member who realize what a great opportunity this is and get you an offer closer to your price.
