I want to put a 12" sub in my 240, and SQ is a must. I've heard good things about Image Dynamics, Adire Audio, and Stryke Audio, but can anyone recommend a great SQ sub that will be happy in an enclosure no larger than 1.5 ft^3 (probably sealed)? Whatever I get has to hit hard and play loud, as well as play as low as possible.

Is 25Hz or lower achievable in a sealed box?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

i've heard really good things about elemental design subs (http://www.elementaldesigns.com/) really good SQ in small sealed enclosures.

but if you can afford it, the best of the best has to be the Focal Polykevlar subs... their 33KX is a 33cm (13" sub) and retail for about $1200 Canadian. look on ebay and you can get one for half of that price. they'll take a lot of power and pump some solid clean bass. http://www.focal.tm.fr/gb/car/k2power/33kx.htm

last but not least, the Eclipse Titanium 12". i've heard nothing but good things about these subs, apparently out performs JL W7's and is cheaper too: http://www.eclipse-web.com/index_speaker.html

oh and the Focal subs have a FLAT frequency response from 20hz & beyond, but the enclosure would have to be built exactly to specs.

That's right. SOme subs, like the one you mentioned, are really tempramental about the enclosure. If you're like .25 cu ft off, it'll degrade SQ like a beotch. I have heard great things about Adire Audio Shiva and Tempest models. They're a little pricy, ~$250, but they're supposed to be really good.

If you want low profile with space saving, I suggest Earthquake 12in low profile subs. They're pretty good.

I hate to be the voice of dissention here, but I'd say if true "in car" SQ is what you're after, then you shouldn't be looking at 12's. I'd suggest a 10 or pair of 8's. I don'tt hink you'd truely experience the low low low 25Hz SQ, just the pressure/wave in the car.

Get a uber high quality 10, but to do so, you'd have to be willing to build a bigger box??

I don't know I guess I'm just not sure you can accomplish the things you posted - 12", SQ, 25Hz, small enlcosure??

What's the most important?

Hmm.. I kind of get your point. It's hard to go down to 25hz and still keep SQ without going to either multiple subs or a single larger sub.

But, if you can find a sub with a resonance frequency near 25Hz, this would help your lows alot, without messing up the rest of the bass frequencies.

Keith: It's a common misconception that 8s and 10s will have better sound quality then 12s and 15s. I have heard 8s and 10s that sounded like crap, and 12s and 15s that sounded like bliss. And I've heard the opposite of this too. It all depends on the specific sub.

True, but I think it would be easier to get SQ from a properly powered 8 or 10 in that small (1.5 cf) of an enclosure. Of course we could add A-periodic mats into the equation and thus minimize the impact of the box constraints.

Ok, now I get your point. I didn't realize there were box constraints

Anyway, I will have to suggest an Adire brahma 12". They are made for like a 0.5cu ft Box! That's hella small. ANd they have a pretty good reputation.

ya the 12" brahma might be your best bet... but don't expect to hit below 30hz. reason why i say that is cause i plugged in specs of sub into winISD and the WHITE line represents the Brahma 12:

yellow = focal 33kxgreen = elemental designs 13 Ov.2orange = image dynamics IDQ 12

all in sealed enclosures no bigger than 1.5 cu.ft.

the focal had the best low response reaching down to 38hz at -3db. -3db is the roll off point, where the sub is no longer very efficient. the brahma was at 46hz at -3db, so it won't hit as low. but IMHO, go with the brahma, a better deal. if you can port the box, response goes waaay down to 25hz at -3db (1.6cu.ft vented). why not port btw? you don't lose SQ, in fact you'd prolly get better performance outta the brahma if you had it ported.
