Hey guys, My little brother is looking for a used car under $6500. He is looking at a Mitsu 3000GT or Dodge Stealth. I am trying to talk him into a 240 or 300z. Any suggestions on what he should get? Anyone know of anything for sale now, in his price range?

How old is brother since it will affect insurance the most, and secondly, what are his transportive needs? Apparently, he's looking in the sporty-car segment, so yeah, Fred's link is good. 1G Eclipse would be pretty sweet b/c he could hop it up a little if he's into DSMs. MR2s are always fun, Z cars, very nice, but if he's young enough to have his insurance company hose him b/c of his age, (I.E. under 25 like me) 240 is a pretty darn good way to go, as long as he's not depending on it in the winter.

agreed.

besides, dodge stealth/3000gt is a tub of lard. the no frills kind. any nissan would be fine...the celica gt-s (5th gen) ---i recommend, there's lot of sporty cars out there that aren't too pricey to insure and won't get your brother in trouble, that is, if he's young.

Also agree. If you're talking sports car, there are better choices out there than the Stealth/3000GT. used Z, Toyota Suprafpr example much better choices. not that the Stealth is a POS. they're not bad. But if your brother is looking for a daily driver thats fun and a little cheaper to maintain/insure, a top line sports car like a Z or Supra may not be the best choice. There are a lotta good choices in your bro's price range:

240sx (the best commuter car out there: I know, cause I had one)Celica GTS (that Sky mentioned, excellent choice)Subaru 2.5RS (WRX's are out of your bro's price range, but 2.5RS's are reasonably priced, practical and fun to drive)Acura integra (can't knock them. well built, reliable and tossable)Mazda Miata (if your bro is under 6' tall, they are an absolute joy to drive, inexpensive and reliable. they are not chick cars. They are extremely well balanced little sports carsHonda prelude (yes, another honda product, but guess what, they're reliable and handle well.Nissan Sentra SE-R - practical and suprising fun to drive.

I'm not a big DSM fan, though I know a few Eclipse owners and DSM tuners that love them. The older AWD Eclipses are pretty fun.

I could come with more if you like. Fun topic. Good luck...

Hey thanks for the info. A little more info on my bro. He turns 21 in a couple of months and wants something to perhaps get started in autox. That was why I suggested to him the 240. I am little surprised to see that so many people are talking up toyota's and honda's. Anyway, keep the posts coming. I am going to print it all out for him and see what he thinks. He will put quite a few miles on it. He goes to school at Purdue in Lafayette IN and drives down to Indy several times a month.

Well, both Honda and Toyota make quality cars too. I think many people on this BB take issue more with Honda owners and the junk they put on their cars than the cars themselves.

Sounds like he wants a fun reliable daily driver. Here are some I do not recommend and why

944 - can get an old one cheaply but maintenance is not for thelight walleted.

Rx-7 blazing sports cars that will also cost a lot to repair

MR2 - go cart handling, fun and quick, but small, cramped, no luggage room, and more expensive to maintain. Celica is a much better toyota as a daily driver

BMW 3 series: great cars, but like most german cars, the maintenance/repair costs will be higher than a japenese car, and they're not as reliable.

VW Golf/Jetta: actually VERY nice cars, VR6's are screamers. Reliable, well-made, fun, quick, great handling, Maintenance costs are not that bad, but REPAIR costs will shock you. Not a cheap car to fix. I had thought briefly about buying a passat, but went with the Altima. I'm happy with my choice

Mustang/Camaro: Yeah they're fast and handle pretty well, butthey are made VERY cheaply, guzzle gas, are unreliable, expensive to insure, and not very comfortable. Also Mullets are encouraged for ownership

Enjoy your hunt

These are some cars I like, I'm only going by experience:

96-99 EK Civic Hatch: This car is real fun to drive and handles real good. I drove this sucker around and pretty quick, light and durable. Drop a B20 in this bad boy and watch it fly. If you get this fix it up right, don't rice it out. It's really ashame that Honda gets a bad name because of of all the dumb mods people do to it.

86-91 FC RX-7: This car is fast. It corners pretty good and the with the turbo model the exhaust spits out 4 foot flames (probably because it was running rich). But the gas mileage sucks really bad. It's a good Drift car. This car is really cheap. Be cautious of the fire problem thing. The rotary can get really hot and I heard of some cases where the whole front end of the car catches fire. But you gotta love a plane engine.

91-95 SW20 MR2: Mid-ship engine makes it quick as hell. It launches like no ones business. It handles well and can be pushed pretty hard. Only two-seater though. I had fun driving this around.

Of course the 240sx: What can I say I love it, I drive one and it's just a great car. Not too expensive fun to drive.

Hope this helps any.
