Good day people,

My 03 Frontier 4x4 Crew rear diff started leaking last year. The oil went low and now it hums. I will need to replace the whole thing or perhaps just rebuild it.

Any suggestions on parts? I'm in Canada. Not much available, Other thanOEM...

Thanks in advance,

M.

I'd suggest junkyard or rebuild (IDK if rebuild kits are available like they are for danas, etc.?). http://www.lkqcorp.com has a searchable parts section for each location, and it includes rear ends. You would need to know what rear end you have.

You could also buy an entire differential from somewhere like 4x4parts.

Couple things: Where is it leaking, and which axle do you have? Do you have the one with the drop out 3rd member, or do you have the one with the 8 bolt rear cover? Is it leaking around the diff or the ends?

Might be as simple as a gasket.

Desert Rat,

Its leaking from the front of the Housing, where the drive shaft enters...

I'm not exactly sure which one I have. Its LSD for sure (Little Sticker on Diff cover). Door sticker says CA46 Axle.

It is Humming and definately some play.

That's the pinion seal. You should be able to get that replaced without having to replace the housing.

Do pull the fill plug on the back of the axle and ensure there's still oil in there. If it's out of oil, that will explain the noise, and it's possible for there to be bearing damage if it's been dry for a while.

Regular 75W or 80W90 gear oil is all it takes to top off the diff.
