Whatever you get you're gonna have to get a new clutch on it in less than 5K miles. Keep that in mind.

Because most people burn the fu*k out of the clutch when they learn to drive on that vehicle. Not to mention the transmission damage...

Maybe you don't have that problem in the land of no hills.

its in the way the person is taught.

and what do i know either right? im just a certified NASA track instructor, hold a few racing licenses, turned wrenches as a technician, and managed repair shops in my past.

if you teach someone to drive a stick improperly, they will burn up a clutch. if you know what youre doing, they will be fine.

I'm sure that just means it doesn't happen at all tho, right?

Maybe you should offer to teach the guy. I was just trying to help with some info. Thanks very much.

The truck I learned stick on never needed a new clutch until I sold it to another kid and then he burnt it up learning. I was taught the right way, he obviously was not.

Like Joe said. It's all in the way you're taught.

of the cars listed, I'd opt for the Civic...cheap to maintain and mod and much more fun to drive than any others listed.

driving a stick isn't difficult....the Civic has a pretty slick shift too....the Spec V is something like a stick in gravel with a very tight gate.

Clutch wear is what people seem to unfailingly mention when I talk about my hatred for automatics and preference for manuals (the irony of my own automatic is not lost on me). To that I say: I'd rather replace my clutch every year than deal with a SINGLE automatic transmission rebuild.

With a manual trans, you perform basic maintenance on wear items and fluids.
With an automatic trans, you spend every second of ownership postponing the day the transmission WILL fail. It's not maintenance, it's life support. The day you drive a brand new automatic-equipped car off the lot, failure is inevitable. It's just a matter of time.
The only exception to this rule is heavy duty truck transmissions.

I hate automatic transmissions. Damn them to Hell.

On cars like the BMW E34 or the older Saab 900, the clutch is only a 60 to 90-minute job.

Found out today the nissan and civic were sold, the vw has the bike racks on top of it but id drive it, and im not gonna even bother with the audi.

I like the s14's but don't see any, ive only seen beat up s13's with 200,000 miles. I want a RWD car but im a picky mo-fo. but id drive a s13 though because of the awsome pop up headlights, styling capabilities, and performance options.

From your list- the Civic.

But you need RWD. Not a Miata (I only say this because I look over the windshield of them and can't own one so nobody else should either)

i taught myself in a 4-door '97 sentra. ugly as sin, but it was a pretty forgiving drivetrain to someone just learning & after i got the hang of it, i couldnt tear the thing up. for all the beating it saw, the clutch lasted the whole 50K or so miles i owned it.

Just get an S13.

Miatas are worthless unless you have a bigger car.

the Civic(as much as I hate fwd) is your best choice from the cars listed. Audi A4 = pile of s***. get it if you want a car that will need repairs every month. the Sentra is the second best choice. the Jetta being third.

Those gen Civics have a weird shifter. It's on the dash. Pic for reference.

Why would his arm get tired? :poke: It's more ergonomic than a normal shift location. It looks bad but it works. It's almost like a (I know that this is a bad comparison) race car. You barely have to move your arm to reach it.

I think your arm would get tired if you were the type of person who always drives with one hand on the shifter. That design would probably be more comfortable with someone who always has there hands on the wheels. It does look like a cool set up though I'd give it a shot before shooting it down.

Good point. I'm sure you would snap out of the habit though if the shifter was all the way up there. :P
