Thanks Brian. That may work out but I was hoping for northern NJ. He's located quite aways south of me. The car is not running well at all at the moment.

Does anyone have someone closer to the tri-state NYC area?

For the level of experience, he is in your backyard. There are very few independent shops owned by Senior Infiniti Technicians, T-3, Vanmeter and Jerry Tucker in Atlanta, Mantua and San Diego, respectively.

Seems like it only took me a little over an hour to drive across NJ.

Across about 75 minutes down is another story. It means a trailer job.

I've gotten local references on here before but I can't find them again. It seems that the older messages are deleted rather quickly.

No, they are here but hard to find in archived posts.

Can't think of anyone closer, and certainly none as knowledgeable that are closer. Sorry.

The labor difference between an Infiniti dealer and an independent shop [that is expert] will be $20 -$30 per hour at most. Parts will cost the same MSRP retail. In ATL your average generic shop is $75/Hr, we charge $85 based on specific experience dealers charge $100-$120.

On an extensive job say 6 hours the difference is only ~ $200 at most. Even on a full days work it's maybe $300.

The labor is not the killer it is the parts costs, which are 55-60% of bill.

The normal $3,000 per year [includes prorated tires and brakes] an old Q requires is minimal whether a dealer or independent.

Failure to spend and save annually sure lets a pile of work accumulate.

Most dealer charge $125 for diagnosis because so many bolt and run when they see the quote. We charge $100 and discount the amount if we do the work. Dealers/techs hate warranty work because manufacturers don't pay for diagnosis and short change the actual labor repair hours.

They can be found by searching. Click the search button at the top of the forum, then click the "Archived Content" button on the right side of the search page.If you have trouble finding what you're looking for, try searching in both thread titles and post contents (lower left of the search page).

Threads are never deleted due to age. We simply archive them to streamline forum performance. So don't worry, unless it was a questionable topic or spam (which isn't the case with the threads you're talking about) it's "still there." You just need to search for it.

There's always Bobby Q45 in Brooklyn. A friend of my uncle's with a pristine pearl white G50 gave me Bobby's number before I realized that Keith Van Meter was only 40 minutes away from me.

If that's a little more acceptable, I can give you the number.

Actually, the Archived Posts selection is no longer functional. Matt moved all the threads to Recent so search engines could catalog them. All posts are in Recent, for the time being.

You can, however, search Archived by poster's name only, if you know it.

Not so sure that was such a wise move as it crippled search on this board. Google is hit and miss, mostly miss.

I disagree.

I've actually found Google to be quite useful when searching. Especially when typing in a phrase. I especially like how it will show you the most relevant thread.

I feel that the NICO Search is more hit and miss. Especially, if you're unfamiliar with it. I'm fairly proficient with the NICO Search, but I still find it a little time consuming. Especially when other threads and posts have nothing to do with what I need, but are included in the search results because they happen to contain one of the search terms in the thread.

I feel that Googling is a faster and much more direct way of finding the relevant info.

LEt me know if a Brooklyn tech is a better fit for you.

This guy has been working on Q's since the early 90's, earning himself the moniker Bobby Q45.

I know it's been a long time since this thread was started (sh*t happened) but I'd like to try your buddy out in Brooklyn if possible?

The early (90-96) Q45's are a different breed than than your 99 and 2000 ones. It's been easier to find shops that can do those as opposed to finding one for an earlier Q.

I don't know if his number is still right. I ended up never having to use it as I found a board recommended tech 40 minutes away from me. Shoot me an email and I'll give you the number.

Yeah, but the big questions are:

How well does he know VH45DE?

Was he trained as an Infiniti technician upon the cars introduction in 1989?

Few left, but they will save you time and money solving the problems and will not damage your car while doing so.

Thanks for the number. What can you tell me about the shop and this person's experience? The engine is missing on at least one cylinder stumbling and the idle searches up and down so I'm suspecting a sensor , wiring or FI issue but not plugs. I had a LOT of work done on it less than 5K miles ago at T3 in the Atlanta area including new plugs. The car was hardly driven the last 2 years.

I need someone with good knowledge of this model Q45.

Unfortunately the place in southern NJ is over 2 hours away and not practical.

Thanks for the info guys.

I don't know much about him aside from what Max told me. I never got a chance to go up there. I saw Max's Q and it looked to be pretty well taken care of. He said that he took it to Bobby for everything.

The first thing to ask is does the shop have a Nissan Consult diagnostic computer...............if not run away fast!!!!

Due to many similarities older [90-96] 300zx shops might be decent.

Well Denis I am going to be in Atlanta again for Thanksgiving so I could drop it at your shop again but that would be one long haul ...The last time I had you do the chains and bunch of stuff and chains had cut through the oil pump to within a micron of failure. You remember that one?It wasn't all the way through but you coulkd see through the metal!

So I called Keith Vanmeter in Mantua NJ this morning and had a nice conversation.

He does not have the Consult but he says he has other equipment with the Nissan software on it.

So is it possible that this 3rd party software & hardware would be ok? He seems to have been working on these since the early 90's.

I guess he wouldn't be able to check my HICAS but that's the issue right now. Engine 1st to see if this is worth saving. Then I need a new ABS pump as it leaks but still functions.

If you know what you are doing and have a high quality VOM with frequency and duty cycle positions you can emmulate most functions of Consult but it might take you 6 hours to read everything you can view in 10 minutes with Consult.

I don't know exactly what Keith has, but he was able to show me the printed results of multiple power balance tests. My guess is that he has the DataScan.

He does plenty of other cars at his shop but he still has G50 parts on hand. At my last oil change, he happened to have the blue relays for the TCS SLIP light issue.

If you are looking for someone closer, consider LR Motors on Rt. 22 in Bridgewater, NJ. No he is not a trained Infiniti mechanic but he is a skilled mechanic with outstanding work practices. He can tune triple side draft Webbers, troubleshoot fuel injection issues on about any fuel injection, and solve ignition problems without selling you mysterious black boxes.

This fellows work skills are top notch. You will have to plan ahead to get in to him, he doesn't take many new customers.
