Hi there, Just wanted to get some opinions on a pair of front components for my '92 240sx. I only want to spend up to 140-150 if possible. I have an '03 Kenwood Excellon head unit to power the setup. It's rated at 50x4(max), 22Wx4 RMS. I won't have an amp to power the components for maybe a year at most(other things to tend to). I hear that I can fit a 5.5" in the door, but I would still like to be able to angle the speaker upwards like the factory. Also the tweeter would probably go on my A-pillar, so it should be as discrete as possible(black dash BTW), with angling options. I'd much rather have good tonal quality over loudness However down the road when I get an amp, I'd like to hear a difference over that and my head-unit(does this make sense). ie room to expand later.

I was recommended Boston Acoustics Rally line-thoughts on these? The ones on ebay run for around $189 tho.

Thanks greatly,-Jamie

Hi again. I'v been shopping around, and doing a little research. I'm wondering if a component set will sound 'off' with my intended setup? Even if I did angle the 5.25" upwards, like the stock, the tweeter would still be a good ways away.

Has anyone used this setup? How severe is the sound 'seperation'? I use these terms loosly, I'm sure you catch my 'gist. Would a good coax sound better? Same budget in mind. I like to think that components offer better sound, because the frequency range is split between two speakers, rather than trying to make one do all the work.

There's a set of Infiniti Reference(5000cs) components that I'm eyeing up for only $119.

Your thoughts?

IMHO, you won't be happy with components powered by the HU. If you can't add an amp, just get some good quality co-axials.

As for components, go for the most expensive you can afford, and the normal brands are all good - Boston Acoustics, Infinity, JBL, Focal, etc.

Hi Rex. Although I don't immediately plan to add an amp, it is a certainty for the future. If there's one thing that bugs me most, it's buying something that I just want to upgrade two months down the road. I listened to a pair of those 5000cs at Circuit City, powered directly from a Pioneer HU. Of course they weren't ear-piercing, but i think they'll be loud enough for the time being. I see there's a lot of people who put those Infinity's in their 240, so I think I'll go w/what works. :-)

They're within my budget online. Circuit City wan'ts $190 for them! I'm still open to suggestions.

Thx,-Slip

Yeah I was kinda suprised, because the *referrence* series was the best that Circuit City had on display. I'm gonna go to a *real* car audio shop today.

i had infinity reference components in my old car and i loved the sound. they could play plenty loud and sounded good with only a cheap JVC head unit powering them. the main benefit of components is that you CAN seperate the highs and midrange. it's harder to set up right, but when you do, it's great. i had my tweeters in the corners of the dash pointing up at the windshield. the sound blended perfectly well (i'm no car audio expert, but i know what i like)

my suggestion, get some 6.5" components, don't worry about turning the midrange, the sound isn't directional enough to be noticable. don't worry about getting rear speakers. on my setup, i could barely tell the difference with them on or off. just put the money towards an amp or subs. it might be a bit different in a coupe though.

check out http://www.ikesound.com they screwed up my order, but i eventually got my stuff and it's pretty cheap.

Heh 6.5" components I had in my s13. They sound better than kappas amped, silk tweeters, they're gorgeous. And only $150 rather than the normal $300 thanks to them being painted the wrong color by the manufacturer.
