I am starting to look for my first 240SX over the summer. Already one slipped right through my fingers (there saturday, gone monday, bummer).

All of the ones I am looking at are S13s with 5 speed manuals, and I am trying to get a fastback. The mileages are about 100k-150k miles, and this is the core of my question.

At about that age, what major maintenance intervals are coming up? Like timing chains, engine rebuilds, transmission rebuilds, etc. Someone mentioned to me that at 150k miles the engine was supposed to be rebuilt. This doesn't seem quite right to me, but I am coming from a Honda, where the maintenance schedule is much different.

2nd question: beyond the usual things to look for on used cars, what problems should I look for particular to such a car (again, S13 5speed).

Thank you for your time.

nnoooo the engine does not need to be rebuilt at 150 k thats rediculas.. there is no recommended interval to replace the timing chain. if the trans works good dont screw with it. at 120k you are due for a basic maint interval. air filter, fuel filter, oil & filter, coolant drain and refill. inspect brakes & lines set of plugs ( recommend NGK plats) inspect your dist cap and wires rotate the rubber. have more faith man its a nissan! not a ford

Thank you for your response. I was told the rebuild @150k by someone I met at autocross. I didn't believe it myself, but since I have never even seen what Nissan recommends for a service schedule, I could not disprove it.

I probably won't follow the recommended lifespan of the major repairs perfectly, but I will probably follow the fluid and filter change schedule religiously like I have with my current Honda.

Nissan Engines generally run a minimum of 100,000 miles (if somewhat abused) to 250,000 miles ( well taken care of).

thats why I am not afraid of buying hi milage cars if the seller and the maintenance record make the right impression.

When buying a used car its a good idea to change and/or flush all fluids.

Powersteering, coolant (replace with 70% distilled water, 1 bottel redline wetter water rest antifreeze, unless in northern winter), Oil, manual transmission fluid or ATF, rear diff ( MOBIL1 GL-5), brake fluid (Valvoline SynPower DOT 3/4),

And replacve all filters (air, transmission, oil, fuel) as well.

Fred...:)

Thank you,

Now all I have to do is find one in budget. That is looking to be hard. Found one '91 for $2000, but it was sold before I could get it. I can only find an '89 for $2000 now. I would rather get the twin cam engine if I can.

I will see how my finances are after a summer of work. Maybe I can find another 91-94 then.
