Friends.

I need a Camshaft Position Sensor for my 92a. It is making a lot of noise and my mechanic says that it will continue to get louder. The cheapest I have found on the Net is about $524. Ouch! Where should I be looking for parts? My mechanic says I should be able to find it for far cheaper, but I have not at this point.

The Camshaft Position Sensor is also known as the Crankshaft Angle Sensor (CAS). It's more or less the equivalent of the distributor. Does the pic show the part that you need?

Did your mechanic determine that the CAS was bad by pulling a code from the engine computer (ECU) or by hearing a loud noise in the area of the CAS? The reason I ask is that I've never heard of one making a noise only leaking internally. The noise that you're hearing could very well be a broken chain guide as one set of guides is right behind the CAS. In fact, you can see a chain guide if you remove the CAS. If it's the ECU telling you the CAS is bad then it's probably not the CAS. I got that code once when an injector o-ring failed and it definately was not the CAS.

If you decide you need to replace the CAS I have a used one for sale in excellent condition from a 91Q that will work for at least all the 90-93 Q's. Email me if you're interested.

Before you throw money at parts do some searching on the possible reasons for a CAS code as well as the chain guide issue that could kill your engine. Good luck.

I too have not heard of one making noise. I say it's either timing chains or the power steering pump tensioner pulley (most likely and cheapest/easiest repair)
