So I am still fighting issues with my 1990 z. when it first starts up it runs fine. get it on the road and fully warmed up and then the magic happens. popping, surging, backfiring, and now it has gotten worse, seems to run partially on one dang cylinder a bit. I have a confirmed good PTU, checked all the injectors and coils with a DMM, they all passed. new TPS, new water temp sensor... I bypassed the fuel pump controller in case it was weak, and replaced the fuel filter. but once the car is on the road for about 20-40 mins, all hell breaks loose and it will hardly run.

Im kinda wondering if it is my CAS. I opened my current one and cleaned it per the thread on TT.net, but honestly it looked god when I opened it. is there anyone close to the DC or northern VA area that would mind coming down to Winchester VA, so i can pull the working CAS from you car and put it in mine to see if it is the issue? I really dont want to drop 300 on a new CAS only to find that it wasnt the issue...

I still urge you to look at the PTU harness itself, mine acted just as yours after about 20 minutes driving and it drove me crazy for about a year, until I finally put the damn thing in (had it in with some other parts I hadn't installed yet) and viola- the problem was gone!
Not a guarantee, but if after an inspection and a couple of good cleanings of your current one and all else is known good, I'd strongly suspect it. The corrosion issue can really eat up those electrodes in the connectors...and, your IACV is also a place to look as it can as mine did, revert to high idle conditions during driving which also screws everything up nicely.

are you talking about the sub harness that plugs into the series 2 PTU and then into the original harness, or do you mean the harness back to the ECU? I soaked and sanded and cleaned the connectors at the PTU/sub-harness and the sub-harness/original harness. they are nice and clean.

Ill look into the IACV tonight. Last night I pulled the CAS and a coil, and checked each coils plug to ensure I was getting good spark. I am... and Im pretty sure the injectors were clicking as well. It was rather windy, so i couldnt track where each click was coming from, but it seemed to be following the firing order as i rotated the CAS....
