I'm buying a car from my sister. She wants a SUV and I don't want to pay more than $3000.

I'm checking Craigslist and finding a lot of '90-98 models with 100+ miles. I'm not a SUV man so anyone have any recommendation (i.e. Only purchase Toyota 4Runner, Don't buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee, etc)?

Don't buy anything Chrysler for that kind of money for sure.

Your safest bets for an SUV would be:

Toyota 4Runner, if you can find one without a billion miles on it.

Ford Explorer - Great vehicle, as long as you take care of the transmission they'll run forever and can be had for cheap

Chevrolet Blazer/GMC Jimmy - Probably the best buy in that price range IMHO, VERY solid vehicles for the money.

If you end up looking at a 1996+ Pathfinder, ensure that it isn't affected by the recent driver's side strut housing recall or has already been inspected/repaired by Nissan. You don't want to buy a vehicle with this:



1990-1995 Pathfinders with automatic transmissions are prone to the stock cooler clogging. If it still has reverse, it's most likely fine assuming everything else on the vehicle checks out.
