So here is the deal. I am currently using a 1.8GHz processor. It seems to work alright, but from watching the task manager, it seems to max out a lot now that I've upgraded to XP from win2k (I actually upgraded like a year ago, but I'm just now getting around to addressing this).

I've done some other things to speed the system up that have helped a lot, but the processor is the last one left.

The MB is a socket 754 and I found a 2.6GHz processor for it, but it's from a laptop. The seller (found it on eBay) says that it's been modified to work in PC's. I can't really seem to find anything on the internet that says that this is a bad thing to do, but I thought I'd ask in here to see what others thought of this. I'd like to make sure that this is legit before I drop the money on it.

It can be made to work. The only issue is that mobile socket 754 chips have a slimmer profile than their desktop brethren, so heatsinks designed for desktop 754 mobos won't work with them. Fortunately, you can either modify the desktop heatsink OR you can buy an aftermarket heatsink that's not designed for a specific socket type and you should be set.

Since you're buying a laptop chip and it's a 2.6, I'm guessing it's an Athlon 64 Mobile. There are actually some potential advantage to running that chip in a desktop. You might find this interesting:http://forums.amd.com/forum/me...52462

That is basically what the seller said, that the chip was thinner, but he says that he's done something to the chip to make it thicker so that any PC socket 754 heatsink will work.

It's pretty cheap, so I'm gonna go ahead and get it and see what happens.
