I am working on the restoration project of my 92 q45. I have it in my shop and taken apart to some degree. I hired a master mechanic from Troncalli Infinity to assist me with some of the issues on my car. As you might expect the mechanic took the entire interior in order to replace the sunroof panel. Once he had it all dismantled he would not come back. I have the panel installed but need a bit of assistance on the alignment and shimming and maintenance prior to reinstalling the interior. So, I thought I would attempt to find a dependable mechanic to assist me on my car.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Why did the Troncalli/Nalley TECHNICAN abandon you? Important to SPELL the brand correctly without the Y.

You are lucky to have found someone to do house calls.

Not sure any T3 working techs actually read NICO any longer? Those that do side jobs use to charge $50/hr portal to portal and return.

You have 5 local dealerships to chose from that's 25 possible options.

Bring doughnuts and chat.

See page BF-32 in the 1994 Q45 service manual: http://Nicoclub.com/FSM/Q45

I once read somewhere Q45tech said that there were a set of questions (20 or so?) that he could ask to prove the "technician" in question is really a factory trained back in 1989 Infiniti tech. Shame I forgot where the post was located but he also said he would charge a fee so a credit card was required at the beginning of the call.

Q45tech do you mind posting the questions to see how good we are?

I think a pop quiz would get you laughed out of any dealership!

Why not take the car to T3 rather than trying to get a tech to make a house call? Byron should be able to get you fixed up...

What does that mean?

Seriously Tech should post a test so we can test ourselves.

Taking the interior out and transporting it out is a project especially if you are trying to restring the cables? Are you just swapping a working junkyard unit?

T3 only charges $85 per shop hour. I would definitely recommend S. Cobb where Byron and Tommy are located vs the other two shops where they don't concentrate on old Q as much now.

It means if you actually walked into a dealership's service bay, said "line up boys, I've got a pop quiz for you - and if you pass you get to work on my 20 year old Q" the laughter would cause serious hearing loss! It's a funny mental image though!

I imagine 98% of the existing Infiniti techs would duck that quiz!

Probably because they are Klingons and you were looking for Vulcans for the Q45 mind meld. Try Smyrna.

Generally the THRILL IS GONE and 97.3% [sic] of US 90-96 Q45 owners are broke and cannot afford to maintain their vehicles to even minimal safe standards.

That means all but 1,000+- in US are dangerous to get near on the road.

As a result the technicans have quit the brand/model as it is no longer a source of significant income. They may still work on units but their heart has long departed.

Agree, it has become just a low cost way of transportation for recent new owners, who are generally young, low income or college kids..... not too many middle agwe high wage earners still driving 15+ year old Infinitis.....even though plenty of older weallthy people hang on to their similar aged Mercedes models....strange

I can't blame them... every time I visit the pull-a-part I leave in a funk thinking that the Qs I just saw were driving the same roads I use a few weeks ago.

Even though its true for some I find that kind of offensive for those who are as dedicated as me.

I'd say its more true than untrue. When I was a broke undergraduate (I'm still an undergrad, but not as broke ) I spent every last penny and every waking moment trying to catch up on neglected maintenance on my '92 Q -- neglect from the last owner as well as myself.

As the Q45 badge loses its pop culture appeal and Infiniti becomes known for smaller sporty cars like the G, the dedication declines. Lexuses (and MBs as Dennis just mentioned) seem to be cars that folks hold on to and maintain forever. Old BMWs like the E30 see new life as stripped-down cars used for sporting events.

You normally won't find any more Q45 knowledge at an Infiniti dealer than you would at a local import specialist, and at least a specialist is willing to listen, communicate, and share knowledge. Take it to a smaller shop that relies on its reputation for customers rather than the service business generated by new car sales volume. Just give up on dealers.

Nissan itself doesn't seem interested in keeping these cars on the road either as parts costs continue to increase. The Z/Skyline/GTR get all the glory and history while Nissan's luxury cars are forgotten. Oh well.

Do what you can to keep and enjoy your car, but don't be afraid to move on when it stops being a hobby and starts being a burden.

There's no interest at Nissan in keeping the Q45 or J30 going as eveidenced by the lack of dedicated efforts by BMW and MB to do so.
