Hey guys, I have been working on my ca18 swap again. A while back I had it ready to run or so I thought, but it turned out the car itself had a wiring issue I missed. Now, I am back to where I was. I have my car totally setup to be able to start, I bought another ecu to replace the one I fried, and I have chipped it and programmed. The engine itself is a ca18det, rebuilt and never started. I had to piece this swap together over time do unfortunately I have not been able to find all stock parts to start with. I currently have it set up with the turbo (t28 s14 sr) bypassed altogether just to start the engine. It has a cone filter, Z32 maf, then piping straight to the tb. I have 460cc RX7 injectors on it with the required dropping resistor pack wired in. I also spliced in the knock sensor and a 3 wire powered O2 sensor connection. I have checked and double checked all the ecu wiring from unit to engine, and every pin connects where it should, according to the impactblue wiring diagrams.

Here is the issue: I can put the stock chip from my ecu into the board and get the car to start turning over and all that but the injectors just gush out fuel, so it won't start on that chip. I suppose it might if I had a stock maf. When I put in any other chip I have burned for the car, I can't get the car to turn over at all. I have three diferent chips here, and I have tried everything from burning a mirror of the stock image, which DOES work as the original does, to trying different changes I make to get the z32 reading correctly, to trying any number of changes to the k values and TP. I know my sensors work, and I know my chips are burning correctly. I must be doing something wrong in modifying my .bin files. I was using tunerpro at first and I was only able to find one .xdf file for ca18det. I then tried to use romedit, but any definitions I load for ca18 result in me getting crazy looking graphs that I can't get a file from. Does anyone still tune chips around here? I keep getting told to buy a nistune board, but I really don't want to as of yet. I have a spare megasquirt 3 around I wanted to hook up on it using the new ms3x board, but I have other cars that actually run well I want to use that on first if I can't drive and play with this car. So, in conclusion, if anyone has a good .def or xdf file that really works, or a bin file with at least z32 maf settings and maybe the 460 and t28 tune, I would gladly take or buy a copy of it. I would even pay to have someone else burn it and send it to me. What I need out of it most is for the car to read the z32 maf correctly, because I think that is what I keep messing up trying to chip tune. As soon as I can get the car just to turn over and idle I will be relieved, from there I can add a piggyback with megasquirt and or get my chip tuning method down right. I have a moates ostrich and have made good results on honda and sr ecus b tuning with tunerpro and crome, but the ca18 has nowhere near the resources to learn from. Help!

Sort of an update...I have been playing with the chip burner, and it turns out I am not doing that correctly every time, depending on what chip I try to burn. I now have a working copy of a bin loaded onto a sst EEPROM correctly, but it has the settings optimized for 550 cc/min injectors. It seems my car is going to start from this chip, but it still won't get me exactly to the top of performance. Anyways, I still can't find but one working xdf file for the ca18det, and tunerpro SUCKs in every way I can think of. I am going to see about getting a part for my intake welded today and then I can try to start her up yay!

On the tuning side of things, I will ask once more, does anyone use anything but nistune now for the ca18? I would love to get my hands on a decent rom program with a CA file. I also learned that it seems possible to tune with nistune even if you don't have a Nistune daughter board. Is this true? I have a moates ostrich and laptop here that I know well for using with a honda, but I have never used it for my nissan without a worthwhile program. I would love me some consult features available with the type 1 nistune board, but once again for the expense I would rather just use my megasquirt and get that much more flexibility. Then again, would anyone trade a nistune board for a moates? I have the chip burner too!
