I am looking for an early 90's 240sx, are there any years or models I should be looking for in particular? Are there any I should avoid? Thanks..

just pick the year that you like best... there are at least 5 different 240sx body styles you can choose from: hatch, 91/92 coupe, convertible, 95-96s, and 97/98 styles.

Mechanical wise, you should look for the timing chain rattle and the tapping noise from the valve train. 240sx are as notorious as supras and head gaskets when it comes to the timing chain rattle and valve train knocking.

Also look for the heat shield rattle when you're shifting gears at high rpms... although this is easy to fix compared to the timing/valve problem.

It depends on what you want your car for. Show? 97-98s typically look the best w/ body kits. Check out bomex.com or spoilers.com for some nice body kits. If you want it for speed, any 240 will suck unless you swap the motor. The KA24DE or E cannot handle turbos for longer than 12-18 months without blowing up. If you import a SR20DET motor from Japan (around $4K), you'll have a two litre turbo'd motor made to stand a turbo. You'll never run faster than a 14 on a KA24DE or E with a N/A setup without spending a galore of money (that could just go toward a SR20 + upgraded turbo which would get you into the 12s.)

If you want it for speed, find a non running 240 for a $1k and swap the SR20 in. That's what I do if i had 7-8K. You'd have one fast car.

Hope I helped.

Nick.

If you don't have 4 or 5 grand to drop on an SR conversion, I'd stay away from 89-90 models, every 240 from 91 up has the DOHC, while those two are SOHC. Good Luck, I bought my 93 coupe in July, and I love it. The coolest car I have ever had.
