what should i look for? common problems, number of miles, etc. most of the ones ive seen have alot of miles, should i be worried about that or not? i dont know that much about 240SX's so im gonna have alot of questions.

whats the difference in the S13 and S14 engine, transmission, etc.?whats the difference in the trims SE, etc?which ones came with LSD or was it an option?

ill probably have more later but i cant think of any.

thanks,robert

The LSD and ABS were part of the same package. You can't get one without the other. I believe the HICAS system was also part of that package. HICAS is Nissan's 4 wheel steering system.

Some cars had a Heads Up Display. These tend to be broken as often as not and are very pricey to replace.

The 240SX really isn't a car with too many quirks. Watch out for rust in all the usual places you'd look on any car and also keep an eye on the area near the spoiler (if the car has one). The 240SX has a timing chain instead of a belt and it is an interference engine, so make sure you don't hear any noise from the chain.

Yes, SE is 5 lug in all, HICAS in S13, no HICAS in any trim in S14, SE=LSD in S14, S13 too I think, but not sure, and ABS in all I think. Like he said, 91+ is DOHC, before is SOHC KA24DE. As for miles, I think 240 owners just drive their cars a lot cause they love em.

Alrighty thanks for clearing that one up. HICAS came in all trim levels of the S13?

That is incorrect. LSD is an option that is only available with the ABS option in s14s and only available with the HICAS option in s13s. SE means alloy wheels, front and rear spoiler, white face gauges (s14 only) and 5 lug wheels (s14 only).

It is possible to have ABS/HICAS but no LSD, but not LSD without ABS/HICAS.

Right, whatever, I don't even have a car. All I know is that it's best to shoot for an SE if you can afford it.

Not really...the SE adds some (excess) weight, and I'm pretty sure that most people can get by w/o power windows.

There is so much confusion on what actually comes with SE packages that it is almost impossible to find a good answer. I am pretty sure what I said is right, but I am just waiting for someone to prove me wrong :P

S13, 1989-1990 - KA24ES13, 1991-1994 - KA24DES14 All - KA24DE

Check the specs pages above, they will give this and a lot more info.

If you are planning to stay KA-powered, the best car (IMHO) would be a 91-94 base coupe - stiffer, lighter, etc. than the alternatives. It won't have an LSD, but that's easily fixed and it's far lighter than an SE with all the bells and whistles.

none of the US 240's came with the sr20. you may not recognize the engine codes, because they are the US engines we are cursed with. rumor has it (may be fact) that it's the same motor as in one of the nissan trucks. the jdm 240 is the silvia, and they all came with the sr20det. people that have them here imported the motor and swapped.

btw, you aren't the same robert that had a black si, are you? (ephatch?)

i cant decide if i want an S13 or S14.... i like both equally. im probably leaning towards an S13 only because theyre more common in stick around here. but should i get a car because of the transmission?

thanksrobert

 Damn bro, that's that exact same dilema I'm in! and both are hard enough to come buy in good condition that I will almost go with whichever one I can get. But here's the breakdown for me:

1. personally, I think the 97+ s14 looks the best in stock form. they are dead even with a kit. the 95-96 s14's and 91-93 s13's are dead even stock.

2. price- s13 will be a lot cheaper initially, which means I could start sooner. I would wait until next summer, then put in the sr. with the s14, I'd do suspension first, and it would be 2 yrs before I could afford the sr.

3. Both will be around the same price to fix up, unless you get a 97 se (5 lug, lsd stock) the s13's will need a 5 lug conv., which makes them just a tad more expensive. this is nulled if you get a base s14.

4. Emissions- s13 basically have less strict emissions. an sr20 is ok as long as it passes the sniffer test- no visual inspection in TX

5. durability- if I get the s13, it's mileage will be a concern. It's gotta make it through the winter, until I can make the swap. the s14's generally have less mileage and in better overall condition.

6. weight and handling- s13 gets the nod because it's closer to 50-50 balance than the s14, and weighs less.

7. that's about it, other than I gotta thing for hatchbacks, and the 180 tailights are sick :ylsuper

sorry if you didn't feel like reading all this crap. I'm undecided as hell, but if it comes down to a nice 97 (white, red, or black) and an immaculate s13 (black only), I'd jump on the s13 like it was a cute asian chick called 'ninja' (j/k, :D )

wow thats weird i really like the 180 taillights too... actually, i agree with everything you said except i think the S13 looks better... today atleast, yesterday i liked the S14. i think i want an S13 though because i like how they look more and it comes in a hatchback, which i think looks better than the coupe. the only thing im not a big fan of is the popup lights, but i dont really care about that.

same here, I liked the s13 first, then I fell head over heels for the s14, but now I'm thinking the s13 again, for price and because I kinda like the renegade street racer/drifter X feel of it- with any body kit I've seen on it, they all look like they're breaking some law, you just can't prove it.

Don't think I'm all riced out or anything because of the body kits. I drive and eclipse gst, and if you know anything about the DSM community, they really hate rice (and civics) The kits are used in Japan to for better aerodymanics, which makes a difference in handling at high speeds, which is where I plan to spend most of my time. (hehehe) Had to throw that in there because this forum loves flame wars.
