I'm looking at buying at turbocharged BMW E30. I went to look at it yesterday, and the owner drove it hard, then I drove it. I forgot to leave it running to let the turbo cool down, and opened the hood right after I got out. There was some white smoke coming from or around the turbo. I thought it might be bad seals, but was wondering if it could just be my failure to let the turbo cool down.

Any advice?

white smoke from turbos equals bad seals. did you see any white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe after you drove it hard and came to a stop?

Depends, if the car hasn't been driven in a while and the owner has been tuning the engine he may have gotten oil/grease on the turbo/manifold and probably just burning off.

Other than that the only other possibility is if the coolant lines are leaking around the turbo.
