HKS Step 2 Camshafts

what am I expecting? what is going to happen to my idle and drivability since this is my daily driver? it is not one of those high lift cam is it?

I know I need upgraded valve springs, but what about valve spring retainer and others? adjustable camgear sprockets?

Idle isn't the greatest.

Too big of a cam IMO. You will be better off buying a smaller duration camshaft.

I suggest something around a 264 duration for a good middle of the road cam. JWT has a nice cam line-up and produces good power, look into the S3's.

Tomei 256's are always overlooked, but are an AWESOME street cam.

i like my 264 Step 1's. There power is perfect for the 2871R. They do have a loapy idle but its nothing that bothers me. I actually like a rough loapy idle. Makes the car sound like it has some balls while sitting still. Ill probably go with something like a 272 Step 2 or 264 Step 2 when i go with a larger turbo though.

Tell me more! Ask about mid street cams for an SR and all anyone ever says is HKS 254 Step 2. Are they really the best or is that just what everyone buys?

264 step 1 would be a mid street cam IMO.

People just buy HKS b/c they are sheep and don't know what else to buy.

I'd get a JWT S4. JWT makes great valvetrain components for SR's.

SPL Parts can get you the Tomei cams and the JWT cams if you want.

http://www.splparts.com

The 256's make more power than the 264's on lower horsepower SR's. If you are looking for midrange and torque with an acceptable top end then look no further than a Tomei 256, it is a very strong street cam.

Do not overlook the JWT components, they are solid as well and offer a ton of choices. The S3's and S4's do very well on SR's and would be suitable as well.

I suggest upgraded valve springs for the JWT cams, but the Tomei 256's you can run well on stock.

I would suggest the following:

Tomei 256 PoncamsTomei Cam Gears

or

JWT S3 or S4JWT Valve SpringsTomei Cam Gears

I looked on spl, enjuku, heavythrottle and such

it seems like hks cams is around 360$ while tomei and jwt is easily 550$

why? is hks inferior? if not I might go with hks step 1 256 or 264

HKS is inferior by design, but they still can make power.

Peak, no.Powerband, from what I've seen, yes.

Think how much you spend to gain say 1-2whp over the entire powerband. I think you'll find that it's about the same as the cost difference between HKS cams and the other companies.

what kind of power gain can you expect with the tomei 256 cams and adjustable gears? (with stock t25 and mild boost) ....and what would you set the gears at?

With a limited turbo like the T25 you won't see large gains versus say ... running 14 PSI.

Cams are a supporting mod for increased airflow, I would venture to say that if you don't have an upgraded turbo (read: T28 or bigger) then you won't gain a whole lot from cams.

I dont know as much but i'd still have to agree. Everything i've ever been told about building engines is that cams are a final adjustment. something you add and tune as a last step in increasing engine power.

You can buy them from SPL Parts for $648.

If I'm spending $600+ on something I'd rather buy it from a company that has a flawless rep.
