There is a 90 Q locally for sale that I am looking at. It has a few issues. It idles real rough, almost feels like it isnt running on all 8. Smokes a bit on start up. Has what sounds like a lifter tic on the passenger cylinder bank. Is there anything else that I should look for or should I just stay away from this car. The car looks like it has been sitting somewhere for a while, and has only accumulated 20k since 02.

Might want to read the Sticky How to Buy a Q45? Shoulc be in the Articles Forum.

How deep are your pockets? This one sounds like it may be $8K - $10K to correct all the abuse. Timing chain guide is the #1 concern, but I am sure there are others with this car.

Reading a lot here will save you a lot when you buy.

Welcome to our club. Look around and you will find lots of information.

Indeed, what Brian said. That article answers all of your questions.

I read the buying guide and have been browsing around on here to get some info. The rough idle/lifter tic sound is my main concern I dont really want to buy a motor on its way out. The center/master window switch will not make the windows go up. The radio is missing, A/C does not blow cold, car raelly appears to need some love. It worries me that it has 94k on it and it runs as rough as it does. Is there any other stuff that I should check specifically that is not addressed in the buyers guide?

The tick is harmless. The idle probably means its injector time. While there are cheap fixes, AC is -not- cheap to fix.

Pass on this.

Its overpriced. I sold my 92 Q in better shape (needed trans mount, new leather, AC flush) for $950, and bought my absolutely perfect 1990 for $1300.

I guess if you can drag them down to $500, and you had $4k available to rehab everything else during the first year, it would be okay.

We {T3} will [almost always] pay $500 for any Physically INTACT 90 Q [not stripped motor and transmission intact] assumming it has 4 tires and can be pushed around. Delivered [flatbedded] to 1 of our 3 facilities.

Most of the ones we buy need an engine, or a transmission or both or other $3-$4k just to run.

We can spent 10 hours stripping enough stuff off and reinstalling it piece by piece to turn the $1250 into $2500+ Eventually..............the stuff that may not be in good enough shape to trust on a customers car can usually find a temporary home on one of the 6 company [employees] Q, as a job benefit.

Springs for active conversions, ABS, electronic modules TCS, ABS, TCU, ECU,HVAC, brake calipers. Diffs are usually noisey due to mileage, sometimes starters alternators are newish, PS pumps for active conversions, MAF, dash modules, window components, finally a hood or trunk or body panel.

Better be sure she is willing to spend the $4K minimum to match your $4K to restore it.
