it needs to be above 145 on all the cylinders. and if any of them are way off, youve got issues.

Check for rust on the trunk, strut towers, battery tray, frame rails, and floor boards..

Unless rust isn't a problem where your from.

You should be able to tell if anything is really busted by driving it...

15 year old cars will not be perfect, just decide what your money is worth, and get a good idea of what shape the car is in. Take it to a mechanic for an inspection if you can...

well i looked at the car and gave the guy a deposit and im planing on picking it up tomorrow. only thing i noticed is that when i removed the plug wire from one of the cylinders, it was covered in oil, the actual plug. what can this be? a loose spark plug or needs a new gasket??

You mean the oil was on the outside of the plug, or was it on the electrodes? If it's on the outside, it likely leaked down from the valve cover. I would not consider that to be a big deal. Just replace the valve cover gasket if necessary. If it's on the electrodes, that could mean bigger issues.

EDIT: I just remembered that the dohc has that spark-plug-in-the-middle-of-the-valve-cover design. I'm not as familiar with that engine, so the part about replacing the valve cover gasket to keep oil from leaking onto the plugs may or may not be accurate. Everything else stands, though.

Here's some helpful info that I picked up on NICO a while ago that I should have done to my own car before I bought it. Take a white poster board and lay it under the car after the test drive. It should tell a lot like leaking rear main seals, gasket leaks, anti-freeze leaks, and back up light switch leaking as in my case (easy fix though). Have fun. I forgot who advised the poster board idea first but I'd like to thank him/her because it's a great idea.

Well I bought the car. Now I have 2 240s, one running. I was saying the actual plug that goes into the spark plug is covered in oil, not sure what electrodes your talking about. But I was also told its the valve cover gasket. The 91 Super Hicas has lsd right? the pumpkin looks quite bigger then my fastbacks. The previous owner was 70 something years old and when i go to test drive the car and took it to 6k rpms he starts freaking out telling me hes in 5th gear at 40mph..

that is common you just need a valve conver gaskit.. ther are little o-ring type gaskets that go aound where the valve cover seals around plug holes.... yea the hicas model has a vlsd... not bad but you may want to change the fluid in the vlsd to get the most out of it...

If the chassis is straight, $1200 is a great deal for a running car. I paid that much for my 93 HICAS that had the engine out and all accessories (and transmission) stripped. Otherwise, it was a great car.

SOrry to change the subject, but ....back up light switch leaking???

Okidokie.....the DOHC valve cover gasket is made of 2 gaskets, one for the surrounding of the valve cover and another for the sparkplug center bay...If is the gasket, is a 25 minute job...very easy. Remember to be careful when you tighten the valver cover, take your time and dont strip any screws.....

C'mon man don't try to make me look bad on here. Just search for it...easy as that. It's also know as the SAFETY NEUTRAL SWITCH. The one one my transmission is leaking oil. Do you believe me or should I scour the internet for more proof? The choice is yours.lolActually here's a pic.

Ended up getting him down to $1100. He was even there this morning checking tire pressure for me.

Ya i did the valve cover gasket on my other 240 and stripped like 3 outside valve cover screws. I was very careful with this one. After i turned the car on it was puffing white smoke for like 10 minutes then it stopped. i guess it was burning some excess oil? and what vlsd oil should i use? i want to put redline in the transmission.
