Were Cali models still detuned from the rest of the country in 03-04 or is that ancient history?

There was a time when all sorts of engine combinations couldn't be had in California. It must have stopped in the 80s but Cali had tougher than federal emission laws even prior to what Arnie has successfully lobbied for in the last year. Although I did buy an 02 Viper from a guy in Socal and it was apparently no dfferent than other models. It could just be that most cars are now compatible with Cali's tougher standards so the differences don't matter. I read somewhere there were 15 states following the Cali rules prior to 2008 but I never knew if that was still resulting in any lower perf cars. From your reaction I guess it isn't a big deal there:)

they are all the same. I bought my 2003 out there due to the great climate and the fact that I found the lowest mileage one in existance at the time. What is DIFFERENT is the warranty on "smog-related" components. Due to Cali's tougher rules more engine and ancillary components are covered by Infiniti.

Case in point (and this is what led me to buy the Elite warranty after seeing how much repairs cost on this beast)

Check engine light finally came on after the intermittent problem I was having with hard starting. Took it it to Scottsdale Infiniti (AZ) where I now live. Crankshaft Positioning Sensor. Estimate to repair was about $350. When I pick up the car the charges were $10 for the loaner for the day. When they ran my VIN through the system to bill, it came back as a car originally sold in Cali, and therefore met the more stringent warranty rules, so the repair was covered. Cool, huh?

And this is why there was a law stating you could not buy a new car outside of Cali and bring it in until it was at least like 2 years old -- OR -- pay a $500 fee to register.... something crazy like that. Not an issue anymore.

Buy it and join the rest of us that love our M's!

Thanks for the responses. M45Caliber I see your twin is for sale at Pinnicle Nissan in Scottsdale. I would be looking at that one as well if it had the Nav. The Pearl on these cars is very nice.
