hey im new here and im lookin to get an 89 240sx 5spd, i found one i like and it runs nice but it has a noise in the motor, the guy that has it said that its a bearing in the lower end of the motor. he wants $500 for it. i know i could pull the motor myself and i would get a few repair manuals to wrok on it myself. does anyone know how hard it is to replace a bearing in the motor and if i should rebuild the motor too, or should i just avoid the car all together? thanks any help would really be appreciated.

if its a rod bering, then i wouldnt drive it far, and you wouldnt need to pull the motor to do it.

If you have the place, the tools, the knowledge, the money, and of coarse the time I would say to just rebuild the motor. It obviously has seen better days and it's hard to say if anything else might be ready to go or already gone... And while you have it apart it would be quite easy to do some internal performance upgrades to it (if youare so inclined to do so that is)

honestly, i was just thinking about doing the bearing and making sure everything else is good. if if something in the motor went id rebuild it and have port polish done and a performance camshaft installed.

If this is a project car, I would definatly rebuild the motor with some performance shizzle. But yeah I'd say buy it. If worse comes to worse, fix it yourself and sell if for a profit.

It's a grea idea. I have owned several $1000 and under cars with mechanical problems and sold them for $1500 plus. Made quite a bit of money off of it and it's a fun hobby. Anyway I hope it all works out for ya.

If it has a bad rod bearing, just take the motor out and rebuild the bottom end. If really want to have a great motor, get the head rebuilt as well. If the crank is salvagable and you rebuild the head, you can usally come in under $1000. Another option is to buy someones used motor and drop it in. KA's are dirt cheap.
