Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and wanted to say thanks for all the info I've gotten from here!

I'm in desperate need of a 4 prong (P61 last three digits of the part number) MAF for my 96 Q. I was going to remove the top to see if I would be able to solder it, but can't seem to get it off!!! I've cleaned the MAF a couple times, works for a couple days, then back to no power... My 96 is fitted with OBDII so I pulled codes and it was the "MAF connector". Finding an MAF for this car is a pain in the A**... I went to a couple of suggested sites and the cheapest I found was $350.. I'm a broke guy right now and hopin for a better deal..

Also, does anyone know if I can re-wire a three prong MAF (I have one of those with no pigtail, but I'm sure I can find one)?

All help is appreciated!

JC

Whoops, the actual code that came up with "Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit" not connector... I don't know if that makes a difference but I'd rather be accurate.

Thx again,

JC

The square plate on the top of the MAF is held in by a bead of silicon or other sealer. You can cut through it with a razor knife and pry it out/off.

Otherwise, have you tried car-part.com? 95-96 MAFs are getting kinda scarce, but I see a half dozen listed today.

All MAF have +12 from battery, +1- 4.5 volts shielded to ecu, and ground.

All the 90-96 have the same voltage output vs air flow curve [the 1- 4.5].

Careful if you reverse the +12 and any line pop goes ecu or fuse depending, careful if you short +12 to ecu it gets expensive.

You give great stats Dennis but i believe his question went something like,''can a P60 be wired to work ina P61 application?'' translation my own of course. I have often wondered the same?

jaycain, do this. search for posts by me. one of them reads how i re-soldered my P61. after reading post email me with questions. it is a pretty straightforward exercise in repairing pcbs with about a 25 dollar investment. i also have an extra one but your best bet is to buy a used from car-part or the like.

Are the 95 and 96 MAF's the same connector? I had a chat with infinity and they said 96 has it's own at $573.69...

Early 95s had the 90-94 connector. Late ones are the same as 96. I'm running a 95 MAF.

And yes, you can wire a 90-94 to a 95-96 plug.

Hey Guys the soldering seems to be working for the most part for now. I'll have to give it a couple days and see what happens. When I took it apart the solder on the prongs from the connector to the circuit board was cracked so I re-did them - so I'm hoping!

Very much appreciated!

A loupe is a great aid. Even a garden variety mag reading glass will do the job.

Jaycain,

I got one in very good condition. What is your price range? I accept paypal and can ship within 1-2 days of receipt of funds. Reply here or [email protected]

96Qowner, do you have a diagram for that procedure?

What was the purpose of change up?

I'm sure it's in the FSMs. Dennis pretty well described it:

Beats me. The 95-96s have an unused contact in their 4-prong plug.

I would still try and get a new one and then see if you can repair your broken one as a spare.

Of all the metaphors that might be applicable, the one that comes to mind first is,'' I'm really not the sharpest tack in the box.'' Meaning; how did Dennis's post explain or answer my query as to diff. between 3 v 4 wire MAF?

If we can confirm that a simple re-wiring of a P60 to P61(or versa/vicea) is a viable MAF alternative that could solve more than a few MAF probs as P60's are more commonly available.

Would you please be more specific and explain in detail ?

Wes, with all due respect, at times laying out of a FEW HUNDRED $ for a electronic componnet might be cost prohibitive for a few when a used one might be worth the ''role of the dice''.

Hey, Capt, I'm not much sharper.

But here's what I'm thinkin':

1.) Get out yer trusty multimeter.

2.) Check to see which wire gets 12V from the battery.

3.) Check to see which wire runs to ground.

4.) Check to see which wire goes nowhere

5.) The last one is the MAF signal.

I'll speculate here and say it serves as a heat sink/disapation plate.

How did the board look? Any bubbling?

Got some new info that may help some...

If you take the connector 4 prong (four screws) out of the P61 it will fit and line up with the posts of the P60, a little solder and your good to go. I found this out by thinking that maybe I needed to do a little more soldering on my P61 and well, I should have left good enough alone... So I ruined my P61. After I removed the P61 harness connector (rounded bigger one) and lined it up with the P60, the bold pattern was identical in size, so I took out the smaller connector on the P60, changed it out with the P61 (larger) connector, noticed it all lined up, a couple dalups of solder and poof, I was back on the road. I don't know if this is a permanent fix, but it works for now!

Sorry if that was redundent...

Have a good one! Hope it helps.

JC
