Today I went to look at a low miles ~89,000 1994 Q45 Base that I found for sale on Craig's list. When I got there I found the car has TCS. To check the car for trouble codes that may not be triggering a Check Engine LIght , I plugged in my ECUTalk handheld unit into the OBD 1 port and retrieved the following codes.

1) Code 34 Knock Sensor 0

2) Code 16 Tacm SW Sigs 37 - TCS Signal

I would like to help the current owner get an idea of the cost to correct the codes.

I know the price of knock sensors and the work involved with an under plenum refresh.

Can anyone shed some light into Code 16 and the most likely culprit?

Thank you,
Craig

Can you clear codes with that scanner, and then see what comes back? Maybe it's one of those glitchy codes that shows up from time to time from a low battery or something. From what I can tell, it's a code that shows no communication between the TCS control module, and the ECU.

Thanks Heath. I can clear the codes -- though I didn't want to change anything about it being a prospective buyer. I'll continue talking to the seller. Another code that registered was Knock Sensor 34 - (0). Oh how I appreciate all that is involved in that operation for sure.

The code 16 from the Engine Control Unit (ECU) is for a Traction Control System Control Unit (TCU CU) or its harness being faulty. I would start with replacing the TCS CU which hardly ever goes bad. If the harness from the TCS CU to the ECU is bad then the car has huge issues.

Thanks Paul and everybody that responded to my email. I'm going to pass on this one for now. I just had a sudden extra expense come up that spoiled the punch for another Q. I know from experience I will need a few extra $1,000 dollar bills laying around to give this one the love it needs to make a complete recovery.

BTW, this Q45 doesn't happen to be located in MD does it? If so I too have been interested in purchasing it.

Nope - Not in MD. It must be a good 1,000 miles away. :)

I just saw this Q45A on craigslist in the SF Bay area - advertised to be very nice.

I have not seen the car, and have no idea who owns it, but If it is as nice as the ad suggests, I hope it gets an enthusiastic home.
[Asking $6.5K, so it better be very nice.]

Sure that is low miles, but 18 year old A suspension are ticking time bombs if they are not already shot. I wouldn't pay 1/2 of that amount, although the 94' was my favorite 1st Gen, it was a T I would be more inclined buy it but still way overpriced $6,500. I think that ad will be up for a long long time. Now if it was $3,500 then that might be more reasonable to add the cost of full suspension rehab and god knows what else will blow up on car that was used so little.
