Venturing out with just a vague description of the location of this car, it wasa miracle that we manage to find this R31 Skyline Passage hidden deep in a palm plantation,2 hours out of town. With a gutted engine and a crack windscreen, the owner wants to unload it real cheap..and I am considering...............

It has a red top RB20DET, (red finned cam covers)I honestly don't know much about this car as all the magazines and books that I have on the R31 are pre 1987. As far as I know this car was the face lift model of the R31, which ran for only 2 years before being phased out for the R32.Maybe there are some Aussies out there that might fill me in on this as the R31s were officially imported to Australia by Nissan.

being a late model R31 it probably has a six port intake manifold with ECCS on the plaque, the older ones had the varaible length NICS twelve port. its like an intermediate step before the silver version was released. the R31's have a good mechanical (clutch) LSD or at least some of them do but you probably know that already.

Thanks for the info.

The thing I'm worried about is the car comes with HICAS and the previous owner had fitted an after market steering and boss kit which most probably will screw up the sensors. How easy is it to disable and lock up the HICAS ? I believe the rear steering involves moving the whole rear assembly as opposed to just moving the toes (in/out) as in the R32,R32,and R34.

if they put on a hicas compatible boss kit it should be fine. the R31 has a weird hicas setup compared to the later skylines. from memory it has two little hydraulic cylinders just foward of the rear subframe on each side that push against the subframe and deflect the soft subframe bushes. (i have only ever seen one when i was pulling a diff out of one a year or so ago and I'd just like to say that with axles attached they weigh 50kg! bloody big diff.) maybe you can make up something solid to replace these like a reverse engineered hicas lock kit for a R32? it really has been a long time since I had a (brief) look at one of these hicas systems.by the way, my folks have a NICS RB20DET R31 coupe and a non turbo parts car. I don't think theirs has HICAS though.

Thanks for the info again. Due to the amount of work that needs to done and the fact that the car is currently being " blacklisted" (due to the outstanding amout of speed tickets..hahaha) we have decided to give this car a miss , for the moment at least .

I checked out the pictures of your rides in the Cardomain site; wow!!!!! How's the work progress going on the Stagea? Do you run a garage or some sort?

Ok fair enough then with the R31.Progress on my Stagea has been slow. The motor is still being rebuilt after ingesting one of its turbines but its not far off being ready to go back together and it will be stronger than it was. The head came up pretty nice after I ported it so I'm happy with that. My insurance company still hasn't paid out for the damage/theft during shipping so that's getting pretty annoying.I don't run a garage I just love modifying cars but a friend of mine runs the GTR Shop and I use his workshop sometimes. Its kind of nice to be surrounded by a lot of GTRs

I love the stagea. It's a great looking car. Plus there's just something about an RB powered wagon that does good things to my auto-loving nerves. I like the color of your wagon. Very nice.

Too bad the R31 would be that much trouble. That'd be a fun car to have.

My god yes, the Stagea rocks! You see, this is why our little group here gets along so well.

Thanks guys. I really like cars like stageas, laurels etc. some of the mainstream stuff is nice too but there is nothing like cruising round in something genuinely fast that doesn't shout about it or isnt well known. Just the thing for confusing wing-wielding ricers and those guys with coloured lights on top of their rides.
