A little wax and a new battery and it'll be perfect! Just kidding. Now that I've bought this I need to get it home, 600 miles. I'm planning on using a tow dolly but have considered driving it.

It needs a tire and a battery-easy stuff. However, it also has a big power steering leak, apparently sprays from a hose below the reservoir. Now, I don't want to cook the pump from no fluid-but could I just cut the power steering pump belt and drive it like that? I know it'd be a b*tch with no power steering but using a tow dolly is a b*tch too.

Any thoughts?

Wow.

What the F did the P.O. do to this car that it looks perfect cosmetically, but a train wreck under the hood?

I hope you have fun with it. I know that AAA will tow a maximum of 300 Miles (per call IIRC). Maybe you do that? And drive it the rest of the way?

Thats a great idea (AAA) I didn't think of that. I'm not a member but I think they will let you apply and then enjoy benefits immediately.

I'm negotiating another deal that's even cooler than this one, and when I'm finished, I'll be the envy of Nico!!

Just kidding.

Don't drive it andy-clearly says not street legal. Might only make it halfway, don't risk it.

With your experience with Q's Andy, you be the judge. If you have it flatbedded halfway through AAA, and you feel that you can get the last 300 miles, go for it.

Or, pay another tow truck to carry it the rest of the way. Your call.

I'm sure that the seller says not street legal to indemnify themselves from legal actions. Or maybe it's an absolute death trap.

Let us know how it goes.

You should see how many more miles you can put on that one dry rotted tire.

Rent a U-Haul with a car trailor. If your not a AAA member already you'll pay alot to them to tow it, they tow 300 miles at a price. I'd get to where the car is by air, rent the smallest U-Haul with a full car trailor.

So what is your plan with this thing?

My new plan is to buy a tow dolly and haul it back on that. I'm going to need the dolly several times for my plan and rental costs will add up to about $200 or I can buy one for $350 and keep it for future use.

This one is going to donate some parts to another car-to be announced....

From past posts/advice, tow dollys are not advised for rear wheel drive vehicles, especially those from Infiniti. (I guess you could disconnect the drive shaft and get away with it, but I am not sure!)

I just yesterday bought a 90 Q off ebay with possible engine issues, close to our winter home, and plan on renting UHaul car hauler to get it back to one of my garages. Car was $600 and is intended for parts only for my 92 Q.

Good Luck!

I forgot about that tire with dry rot. Driving isn't advisable.

Can you tw a Q with the rear wheels on the dolly and the front on the road? That wouldn't affect the trans would it?

I agree with the small U-Haul with the full car capacity.

All you have to do is back the car up on the tow dolly, so that the front wheels are whats contacting the ground.. You should be fine...

Personally if it were me, i'd say fuggit, and drive the thing with a support crew, but thats just me. It all depends if its a low or high pressure hose... if it was a low pressure hose, I might try and fix it on the spot and go... Low pressure lines arent that hard to replace, and you can use bulk fuel hose from autozone.

Of course, having a dolly isnt a bad idea and would probably come in handy...

Wes:

Wouldn't you have to turn iginition onto the "run" position, to disable the steering lock feature? I have done the tow dolly thing before, with FWD vehicles, but never what you are suggesting.

I just might consider your way with a dolly when I pick up the 90 Q, the dolly being a lot less weight. Tow vehicle is Chevy 5.7 Burb.

I've rented a car trailer from U-Haul. Works great. Rent it from where you are and they don't need to know where you're going with it. It doesn't have an odometer. I think I rented mine for like $75 or something.

AND if you start to part it out, I need the foglights!

IM confused... Dont you want the steering wheel to remain locked? You just straighten the wheels and lock the steering wheel? i dont see what harm that would cause, i see cars being towed with the assend up all the time.

Well, the Volvo is loaded up with all my tools and I have a "new" used tow dolly behind it. My 5 year old son and I will be leaving Atlanta at 2:30 pm and driving 9 hours to West Palm Beach to pick up the car, completing the deal at about midnight. I'm tempted to turn right back around and start driving but we'll see.

Then, on Sunday I'll be going to pick up the reason that I bought this car....

I'm back and all in one piece. I had one fright just after loading the car on the dolly ( 1 am) when I swerved at 55 mph to avoid something in road and the dolly and Q started fishtailing.

Holy sh*t!!! Its amazing how fast your heart can get to your throat.

It was a great adventure and my son loved learning how to do "man stuff" which I told him was the point of the trip. For example, we slept in the car at a rest stop with the truckers from 2:30 am to 4:30 am and then jumped on the road. My son said, "Momma said we were going to stay in a motel." said, "No, girls stay in hotels, boys sleep in the car."

We also had to swap the dolly tires side to side 45 miles fom home because the Q wouldn't lock its steering wheel perfectly straight and so was slightly angled on the dolly coming home. The angle of the Q pushed the dolly sideways the whole way and wore one tire to the second cord in 600 miles.

A great adventure but Christ I'm tired.

Passed a major milestone on the parts car purchase yesterday!!

I sold the differential yesterday and with that have now sold $1200 worth of parts off my $1200 parts car. And that doesn't count the parts I took off to fix my 99 Q.

I just need to sell a couple of doors and i'll be sittin' pretty. Thanks to all those that bought parts.
