Crank turned to second mark from left. Pulled valve cover off and I was under the impression that the first lobes on the cams should be different then whats pictured. BTW- It's a sr20

I am not familure enough with the DOHC to answer your primary question but what I noticed is that the Cam itself looks a little blue as though it was oil starved at some point.

I would recomend you have an experianced person check that while you have the cover off.

On further review:

The darker links don't line up with the dots! I only see 1 of them as well. What the hell is going on here? This must be my main problem...

Whats my next step ?

Did you hand crank it until TDC? Thats when they should line up.

I'm pretty sure its at tdc, look at the pic of the crank pulley. I hand cranked it around again to make sure, and the dots are still not lined up. I only see 1 dark link.

My FSM is in the garage- What do I do to get those links on the right spot? I don't need to pull the oil pump cover off, right? Please help, I hope this fixes my ride so I can finally enjoy it.

This might help..........http://www.jimwolftechnology.com/tech_details.aspScroll down to the bottom to camshaft installation instructions for the sr20. There is also instructions for adj cam gears. It should tell you where you should be at stock??

The problem sounds to me like it is in your CAS and timing to me. I wouldn't think your cam timing would be off that much with stock cams??

The dark links only line up with the camshaft mating marks something like every twenty to thirtyith rotation. Just because they didnt line up in your pictures doesnt mean they dont line up, it may just take a few more rotations before everything lines up. Rotate the crank thirty or so more times before you assume the mechanical timing is out of whack.

Thats great news! I didn't want to replace a chain or have to take it off. I'll crank it until the indiana jones music kicks in for everything lining up.

Thanx for the link! I 'm not that bad of a newbie tho... I just thaught the links were off, I didn't know I had to crank it around 30x. I never seen any of the fsm's or write ups mention that.

I got it all lined up today and reinstalled everything. Start up was rough, but it started and died. I didn't get to set the timing which I'm about to go mess with.

Anyway, while i had the valve cover off i got to paint it and put some new bolts in when it got reinstalled. I'm not a painter and never tried other then some graffiti back in the day. I'll get a pic up tonight tho, it looks good!

go into more detail, did you ever mess with the cams? or is that a swap you cannot get running?

I VERY recently installed the 248/232 cams in my S14 (ka) granted they are different, i had similar problems, it would fire, and sound great for a second, then die.. whenever i pulled the distributor out, i put it in a tooth off, then the car would actually crank, and stay running while your messing with the gas pedal..

After 2 days of diagnostics, turns out the exhaust cam was 1 tooth off CCW..

please give more detail on when it stopped running.

zerothread?id=342630^ That will bring you up to speed. The motor was rebuilt before dropping it in because the bearings were shot. This is a swap/rebuild I can't get running with power. She runs, but no power at all. Your moms station wagon would beat me! I reset the cas sensor as shown on frsport.com and no luck. I think I'm going to buy another cas and swap them out to see if it helps.
