That's not the knob though. What you need is the old school wooden Amberbock beer tap handle. It's about 1' long. In my bronco i had an Amberbock trans shifter handle, a Bud Light T case handle(this particular bud light handle was shaped like a T, so...) and for the pto winch, I had a MGD clear tap handle. Next to all this, I had my home made chew spit cup holder, and nifty little chew can dispenser. How original.

a longer shift knob let's say a 3" knob. measure at the top of the knob from 1st gear position then shift into the 2nd gear position measure the distance. thats probably gonna be a 6" throw or more. now measure the distance of a 1" knob at the top then u might end up with half the distance. u might be thinking 6", 3" whats the difference. well the longer the throw the longer youre foot is off the gas pedal and more on the clutch pedal. that little 6" throw will give u a slower 60ft time. if drag is ur thing to do. but for auto-x that also makes a difference. And i'll leave it up to u to figure it out.

The "knob" has nothing to do with the length of the throw, however an adj. short shifter will decrease the distance needed to rip thru the gears faster. The " knob" that you use to grip the shifter is of personal choice. Shorty "ball" type knobs look cool IMO, but having a "tall" knob would however place it closer to the steering wheel via right hand, allowing you to grasp it quicker. Having said this I've gotta go take care of something...:naughty

:D...Seriously though, Check out the new Honda Civic Si shifter placement...on the dash! Now thats close, still I'd like it on the steering wheel F1 style!

im actually still learning to control the manual transmission so i dont mind the long throw. its a pickup truck drivetrain anyway so its kinda appropriate.

i made a shifter knob for my little brothers hardbody pickup. it was a broken golf club handle(about 8 inches long) with a nut that i just welded on. he loves it. i also made one for my 240 out of an old wrist pin out of a caddy northstar engine. too small. stock knob is great. i am working on a knob that will tilt over towards the steering wheel. i think i will prob just cut the shifter off and built a whole new upper section of shifter that is close to the steering wheel. combo that with a short shift kit(gonna make that too) and i should have stock throw with knob by the steering wheel.
