Car: Wine Collecting and my burgundy 92 Q with forged 17 x 8 SSR wheels

Post

Sorry its been a while since I've contributed to the board. I have been browsing once in a while, but life has been pretty busy lately. Fortunately, the Q has been running great as of late which might be another reason I have not been posting.

In any event, I thought I would give you Q wheel & tire enthusiasts a quick update on the 245/45 17 Yoko AVS dBs. I now have about 5k on them, and can't find any complaints. They are still smooth, quiet, and handle great in the rain. The tread wear is not really even noticable yet, but they do generate an interesting hummmmm when powering through turns. Dennis did notice some very slight feathering on the front, but that is most likely from the aggressive onramp driving around Atlanta. I rotated them front to rear at about 2k, and they have yet to need rebalancing (absolutely no steering wheel vibes). I know what you are thinking, and I can't believe it either. I have always had a hard time keeping the Q wheels properly balanced. They came balanced from Tire Rack on my SSR GT1 forged wheels. (there are pics on the link in my profile)

I just returned from another FL road trip, and the Q is still smooth as glass on the highway. I had the opportunity to play around a little with a late 90's corvette on I-65. We were just having a little fun passing everyone on the road. I was surprised that the vette would barely pull away from me when running from 80 up to about 115, and I was pretty loaded down with my wife (got married last month), luggage, and a few cases of wine. I just thought I would share that little story with you guys. I'll try to contribute more often, certianly when problems arise (and they always do).

I've got the hummmmm and the feathering too, but most of the feathering was to blame on left rear alignment being off (it's better now).

Just remounted my 225/50/15 Yoko AVS dB on Tuesday (swapped sides from last winter). Need to get an alignment again. Not sure if the tires are out of balance or if they just take a while to warm up. Still getting some weird vibrations, but such is life.... need to take a long trip and see how the car behaves.

I've been blaming my vibrations on the driveshaft all these years, but I replaced that last month... Now I discover the driveshaft wasn't to blame for everything!!!

Uggghhh.....

Once tires are used once the vulcanization continues when they are resting off the car, of course at a slower rate but they are still exposed to ozone and temprature changes.Storage in a vacuum at 32F would be good!

They make [100] reference tires [for the San Angelo, Texas Test Track] they found out if the have a quanity on hand that every year they get progressively harder by roughly 20-30% per year just sitting in the warehouse brand new!

The fallacy of keeping ice tires more than 1 season is by the next winter they are half as good as you expect.Even the Michelin Pilot H4 are only REALLY GOOD for a year [15,000 miles] just because they have 7/32" tread left don't be fooled they measure 50% harder.

Why I try to never use winter tires more than 18 months even with summer rotation.

Are the Michelin Pilot H4 better about not needing to warm up to smooth out?

If not, what tire is??

The next time I buy all-season tires for winter, I think I'll get the hardest tire I can find -- I'm tired of lumpy tires for the first 10 miles when 90% of the trips I take are 10 miles are less!
