Hey what up guys I'm new to the forum. I have a 89' (s13) 5 speed hatch that has hella issues. It's currently wasting away on my driveway due to my lack of knowledge on cars. I'm super motivated to learn and fix the car up but none of my immediate friends share the same passion for cars like i do unfortunately it just sits. Anyways Thanks for the warm welcoming in advance.

Welcome. You should probably use the internet lots more. it's where i learn 95% of what i need to know about my car to work on it. you don't need friends passionate about cars to get yours running. elbow grease and internet.....maybe a manual or two if you can get your hands on them.

Ya I agree with you, I look all over the internet for answers and I have a chilton which imo sucks but w.e
I just learned how to check the diagnostics by accessing the ecu and it looks like it's throwing 4 codes;
-13 Engine temperature sensor circuit
-14 Vehicle speed sensor circuit
-32* EGR function
-33 Exhaust gas O2 sensor circuit

Hi fellow Californian!
I had a NorCal roommate once.
Hella used hella a lot!

The main things that could be effecting the performance of the vehicle would be the temp sensor, EGR, and O2 sensor.
I think the Speed Sensor is mainly just used to send information to your speedometer.

The engine temperature sensor is the large sensor with a red plug!

And the O2 sensor is below the heatshield, on the downpipe.

And the vehicle speed sensor looks like this:

Not sure how to cure the EGR issue, I never messed with mine much before removing it.

Thanks alot man..The sensors aren't too expensive so I'm gonna pick up the o2, the speed sensor (my speedometer jumps around like a kangaroo on crack right now) and the temp sensor and switch them out and hopefully It'll clear those codes. as far as the egr my neighbor suggested I clean it and that may be all it needs? I was reading on a different post and someone suggested blocking the egr off but idk if thats a good or bad idea? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nissan-2 ... 500wt_1182

its cheap on ebay so idk might look into it?

Yeah, cleaning sometimes does the job for the EGR.
If you plan on passing smog tests, you should not block it.
Also, the bits of exhaust gasses it puts into your intake air keeps the cylinder heads slightly cooler.

After you read the ECU codes though, you should turn the screw clockwise, all the way, and wait about 2 seconds to clear to codes.
Or else it'll just store the old error codes.

Hmm, I've never seen the speed sensor location on an SOHC transmission before.

Go to this link and download the .pdf file of the Factory Service Manual.
It's filled with a lot of good information if you look hard enough.

Good luck!

The kangaroo probably just needs new shoes. Talk to Ozzie about that. He's the resident 'roo shoer.

Welcome to the forum. If you haven't already, download the factory service manual to your car. Its available through my signature.

lol Razi. I think he has a SOHC engine. All the locations are a little different than the pics you showed.

Anyway, the VSS is the last sensor on the passenger side located on the transmission.

Yeah, SOHC and DOHC engine looks different, but the temp sensor and O2 sensor are in similar places.
