I posted this on the 720 pickup forum but no one looked at it so I thought I would try the online mechanic forum.

I am replacing the rotors on the front brakes of my 1985 2WD 720 with Z24 motor. Each of the old rotors was fastened with six bolts. Each bolt had a shoulder built into the head, and each bolt ALSO had a split lock washer under the head. However the factory microfiche DOES NOT show any split lock washers. Probably the rotors were replaced by another owner?

Does it matter if I use new bolts without the shoulder head? Why wouldn't the factory use lock washers in this application?Should I use some blue medium strength Loctite when I re-assemble them? The blue #242 Loctite is only rated to 300 degrees F. The rotors will get hot, but I can't imagine the hubs and bolts getting to 300 degrees unless something is seriously wrong.

FYI the bolts are 9 mm shaft, with a 14 mm head and are 31 mm long without the head.

I am new so thanks in advance for any advice. I hope this fits in here, but the tire-brake forum was all about wheels and offsets, etc. Thanks,Richard

are you refering to the same bolts that hold the wheel on (lugs)?

No. Actually I am referring to the bolts that hold the rotor which is a separate piece, onto the front hub. BTW this is a two wheel drive vehicle.

I ordered new bolts from Nissan and they just came in yesterday night. They are cadmium plated and have no shoulder under the head like the ones I removed. In addition the un-threaded part of the bolt is very cylindrical and will really position the rotor very securely with no wiggle room.

The part number was changed so this bolt replaced the old ones which are no longer made or provided. So unfortunately I may never know if the original bolts had shoulders under the heads sort of like built in washers.

SO... Do I use lock washers? flat washers? or Loctite (only rated to 300 degrees F)?

Thanks again,Richard

i wouldn't think you would need loctite as long as you torque them down to spec (if you can find it). as for the bolts, it sounds like the split lock washers and all were put on by someone else, but again if nissan didnt send you any you should be good. Most of the time, people do the exact opposite with brake assembly anyway (anti-seize on all the threads) so you should be good to go just putting them on as is.
