I'm sure not a lot of guys on here (except for the guys that are on my facebook) knows that I got devasted by the overflowing of the Susquehanna River yesterday thanks to the remnants of Tropical storm Lee and Hurricane Irene. I woke up at 4am to the blaring sound of an emergency vehicle stating "This is a state of emergency! You must evacuate your homes immediately!" I jumped out of bed and looked out the window and saw the river water surronding my new pool that I just put in. At that point, there was only one thing to do...Go down stairs and make what might be my last pot of coffee! After enjoying 2 cups of joe, I rolled up my sleves and went downstairs moved all of my electronics upstairs and prayed that the waters didn't go that high. My buddy came down and helped me with the rest of my stuff and moved my 2 cars and racebike to higher ground. That was all by 7am. By 10:30 when we ventured back down my street, My pool was almost consumed by the muddy river waters and when I peeked in my basement, which was a walk out, there was about 6" of water on the floor and looking at the glass on the door, the water level was up about 10" above the glass part. I felt I was in an aquarium! After we left, they closed my street down as by that time the river was rushing across the street. Dopwntown Athens had 4' of water and rising! When it was all said and done, there was 10' of water downtown and 3' of mad rushing water on the other end. We was literally trapped! It was long day of pumping water and helping others. Today, the river has gone down 2' and receding. Got word that our electric will not be restored till late Sunday and our gas a couple of days afterwards. Well I can't do anything without electricty so I decided to pack up and head to philly. Thank God the water went down enough that we can get in and out. I'll find out more later and keep you guys posted...

If you don't know where Athens PA is, here's a map
It has the Susquehanna on one side and the Chemung River on the other. I live closer to the point of the penninsula.

What sucks is that I do have homeowners but no flood because when I bought the house, they said it wasn't in a "flood zone"...yeah right...

I feel that my homeowners should as least cover content but looking over the policy, it doesn't. :tisk: That's just stupid!

ord has it that FEMA is coming to the area. Hopefully I get somekind of federal aid relief...

At this point, It seems all of the damages will be out of pocket cost because I didn't have flood insurance...but then again I was told by the insurance company that I didn't need it because I didn't live in a flood zone.. I should sue them for their incompetency! :chuckle:

Did they actually advise you not to buy flood insurance? Do you have a record of that? Depending on the severity of the damages, it might be worth it to talk to a lawyer.

unfortuantely no..everything was verbal....as well as all of my neighbors. Perhaps a class action suit might be good and teach those peckerheads a lesson!

Haha, I don't know if a class-action suit would be advantageous or not. That's probably a very fact-specific claim. But seriously, even if you don't have documentation, depending on how hard you're about to be hit in the wallet, maybe you should spend an hour with a lawyer talking options.

If all else fails, write up a letter to your local newspaper if the insurance company doesn't want to help you out.
