So many things come to mind when you mention dealerships, 90% of them bad, but one thing that really shows them to be somewhat less than ideal is the provision on their sites to "value your trade in".
That is the biggest rip off among many rip offs. Every dealer site has this 'feature', and if you input your car, be prepared to be seriously lowballed.
I sometimes go to different dealer sites, just to see what's out there, and then for the fun of it, I input my car details just to see what kind of trade in price they come back with. Its pretty disappointing, to be polite.
I sold my Mazda 6 last year, and did the on line trade in pricing with my local Mazda dealer.
Just for fun, I even went to see them because they advertised they buy used cars for cash, for top dollar...haha.
They offered $14,000.
Looking on line at similar cars for sale, my Mazda routinely listed for between $21,000 to $23,000 retail.
Now I understand they don't buy cars at retail. There's no profit in that. Got it.
I didn't want to go through the hassle of selling my car privately. Dealing with a bunch of Yahoos showing up at my door and driving off with my car, or paying with a fraudulent cheque, is not my cup of tea.
Cutting a long story short, I sold the car to a Nissan dealer for $18,600. Zero hassle. Drop off the car, pick up the cheque.
I would say, do not bother with dealer on line valuations of your used car or potential trade in. They'll screw you over.
