Hey Guys,

My "Service Engine Soon" light came on yesterday on my '02 I35. I figured its probably some maintenance minder or something. But I really don't want to take it into the dealership for diagnostic (and pay their outrageous prices!).

I saw on the Nico boards that many auto parts stores loan out their code scanners. But when I went to Kragen's, I was told that auto parts stores were prohibited from loaning out code scanners in the State of California.

It sounded like a bunch of bull, but I wanted to check in with y'all for your opinions.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Bring you car to Autozone and they can scan your ECM for any DTC code. They have tools available as loaner but I don't think a scanner is one of them.

auto zone does loan out scan tools, but not too many people do it because of the large deposit amount. it may be different in cali with the hardcore emissions, as customers are able to erase codes that are triggered. cali may not loan tools for this reason; a lot of codes are emissions based. anyways, erasing the code only leads to it coming back on in a few days or miles until the issue is fixed.
