I had Lo-Jack installed in the dealer just to have that peace-of-mind evertime I park here in the Los Angeles area. Initially, they said it's $799 but they're giving it to me for $699. I bargained and got it for $599.

But they got back to me. They registered my cars color silver, instead of gray (daimond graphite). A color blind person can tell a difference between a silver and a grey because one is brighter and the other one is darker. If he is indeed color blind, I hope the technician can tell the difference between a red, a blue, and a green wire while installing my lo-jack.

I just hope my lo-jack works. Even if it does work, and if my car was stolen, they'll be looking for silver M, instead of a grey. Great I'll settle this first thing in the morning on Monday.

Let us know how it goes with them.

FWIW, I am biased against the standard, i.e., the old version Lo-Jack. It is almost useless, since you have to report the car stolen (when you find out) and then they enable the radio locator. By that time, the car is taken apart and the Lo-Jack is disabled or in another state/country. What is little known is that the car recovery rate with Lo-Jack is no better than without it!

It is far better to get a unit that starts transmitting the location when the theft occurs - like the new Lo-Jack (may not be on the market yet) and Clifford Viper GPS systems. These are based on the location technology that my company deploys.

No personal experience here, but I have heard that others who have had a Lo-Jack installed had said that if the car was found, it usually was damaged by the thieves such that you wouldn't have wanted them to locate it to begin with...

I looked at lo-jacks website and it seems they're available now. I also checked clifford viper gps and their msrp is the same amount that I paid on my lo-jack. I should've shopped around on what's available before jumping into this. Anyway, two law enforcements that I'm acquinted are impressed with lo-jack. They said that once activated, there's no reset button in their car to stop the alarm until the car is found.

In that case, I hope that is what you have!

[/quote]Problem is that the car is not usually discovered stolen instantly (in the old system), and the crooks look for all the usual installation places and destroy the transmitter. Plus, once you are out of the city that it was stolen in, there is no real chance that the highway police will catch it - the transmitter is fairly low-power (few mile range at best).

In the new system, the transmission starts and sends a position fix often and our system tracks the vehicle wherever it goes - including into Mexico (our network goes to the edge of Guatemala.)

We have broken up a number of car theft rings, by the way!
