Can anyone tell me what this light is for, and more importantly, how to turn it off?

Hey there and Welcome to NICO!

There was a discussion about this here recently, the light is ambient lighting to add a soft white light to the cabin switches. I guess it could be disconnected if you remove the switch panel and disconnect it, but I do not think many people have done that yet.

I actually just noticed it the other night for the first time. It doesn't bother me enough to mess with it.

It's just an illuminated console light. It's there to provide some soft ambiance, not like the way ricer's put LED's all over to make crazy glow. It doesn't serve much purpose, but can be helpful if you are looking at something in the dark and don't want to put the cabin lights on.

My Titan has a light like this as well. My guess is it helps make it easier to see the console as no ambient light would mean looking from the indirect light on the road from your headlights to a dark console. This might take a bit more time for your eyes to adjust and have to adjust back to the road again. Decreasing this time might make it safer. Perhaps you can try testing this out by looking back ond forth between the road and the console with and without the light several times. Make sure you look at things in your console that aren't lit as well, cupholders, shift knob, etc.
