I know this is not a new issue. But it was interesting reading the list of cars that have black boxes that record certain information about your car and driving habits. What is further interesting is the fact that they are used to prosecute people in accidents. What do you all think? Is it an invasion of privacy?

see what they fail to realize... is if its a modefied car... tire size.. brakes... what happens then.. that data would be off.. wouldn't it??

i've seen that a while back though... btw .. my car is too old to have one... 89 hehe....

it'll also get to the point where cops can enter in your license number and be able to shut off your car or something... people are so gonna be bypassing those lil sh!ts

yea, this black box would be for a completely stock car.. I'm sure you can re program it for whatever you do to your car. but again.. you won't be able to swap a SR into it and get away with it nemore...

What a crock.

Thank god for the internet. It will always tell me how to take them out.

And also... notice it's only in American cars. Hopefully I won't ever have that problem. Just another reason that I will never own an American car.

it records only the last like 5 seconds before the crash , the boxes real use is to calculate the force that the airbags should deploy at and if they dont deploy what kept them from deploying , as long as your not being stupid behind the wheel i dont see it as being a problem . just another incentive to be calm and safe out there

my caddy has this box , it was a late 94 so it inherited the box as a ramp up for 1995 Deville production from what im told

the box is in the airbag module which is sometimes inside the ECU , this cant be reprogramed but once the ecu is reprogramed for the new tire/wheel combo and new gear ratios the airbag unit will recivve the proper info again , the black box side cant be remvoved without comprimiseing the airbags , and if remeber right tampering with the stuff is as illgeal as tamering with emissions equipment

basicly if you hit something at 155 mph on the track and dont get hurt you just have a hard copy for bragging rights of your speed , on the street the procequtor has something to charge you with vehicluar manslughter with , belivge me , if i get hit by some basturd going 100+ and i get hurt , ill want the cops to use my black box to prove my inncocence and use the guily partys balck box to prove his guilt

if the G20 had this black box the airforce wouldnt have been able to procequte me for speeding , the black box would have told the truth and i would have been able to recooperate from my injureis and been able to go after the airforce for the poor quailty of the road i was on (no speedlimit signs, no guardrial to keep others from going off the cliff , no saliting on roads to keep people from looseing controll )

sorry for the rant , between the crash and my ASE training on airbags im very much into this kinda thing

I don't disagree with the idea, but don't neccessarily agree with it either

You have to worry about what precedence is set by having these in the car. Technology can certainly support recording car/driver information for prolonged periods of time. Think about this.

Insurance companies canceling your insurance for taking the car to the track.Dealerships voiding your warranty for what they term abusive driving.Police using the box monitor driving and fine you.Government doing what they do best. Intrude into your personal life.

I am sure there are good things that can come of technology like this. That is why we debate things here.

Ultimately, as long as Americans love cars, and the current adminstration caters to car-loving Americans, bull**** like this wont go far.
