Ok from what i have been told, detonation sounds like marbles or rocks bouncing around in the oil pan or motor somewhere...Is this correct..??

next question is, im now running open dump on my wastegate ( dumping to atmosphere ) and as we all know when that wastegate opens, its LOUD..!!!

Which way will it be best to hear the detonation, open dump to atmosphereORrouting the dump back into the exhaust stream to keep it quiet under full boost, this way the detonation can be heard better..??

ThanksRobert

i heard my detonation just by revving the engine while in front of the car.

rn - You're runing JWT, right...?

That pretty much eliminates any chance of detonation, unless your base timing is at 25 BDTC or something....

Otherwise, it's so conservative that detonation isn't likely.

That's doubtful, unless your timing is way advanced or your fuel is absolute crap. Detonation typically only occurs under higher loads. Revving up the motor at a standstill should not cause detonation. Unless you are on a dyno.

You can get a MSD Knock alert or similar device to display the knock value so you don't have to listen for it.

Doesn't the SAFC2 have a knock sensor input on it?

ORION:Yes im running JWT ecu. The reason I asked is cause I just wana know what it sounds like in the event it does happen, IF it ever does happen, then I know i have to back off, instead of hearing it and not knowing what that sound is, then its too late...

So basically if i route my dump back into the exhaust stream, that should keep the noise down under WOT so that ill have a better chance of hearing it, right..??

Thanks

obviously, bc i wont be as loud.

if you hear it once it is too late. my rings/pistons went within a few sec of boost.

Tictakman, that sucks, hopefully you rebuilt and are boosting again safely.

you can also run a second muffler from the wastegate, throw a small tractor muffler on there, and it will be quieter.
