You will most definitely need an adapter for the vg30 auto. they're not that difficult to make, with a little bit of ingenuity.

The VG30e uses the RE4RO1A and the VH45 uses the RE4RO3A. Both use the same pump bolt pattern so the bell housing are interchangable so it will bolt up. You do need to change the input shaft so you can use VH45 torque convertor.
However if I was you I'd be swapping the auto's over as a 1A is not really going to cope with a the torque of a VH. I'm not sure if the tranfer case will swap between the 1A and 3A but I'd imagine it wouldn't be far off.
FYI I have VH45 almost installed into a 93 Pathfinder but have used 3A (eg same as VH45 but out of a Patrol) with Patrol T-case and axles. Oh yeah and it is turboed.

I have seen first hand a VH45 in a D21 without touching firewall or chassis. Radiator is in factory position and the chassis is unmodified. The only major was altering the steering to remove the rubber flex joint and replacing it with a U joint. The truck is now 2wd but it can be done with a bit of care.
