When I first start my car at night and flip on the lights, all of the dash lights are very dim, and same with the headlights. When I rev the engine up to about 4000rpms everything instantly gets to 100% brightness and they stay like that until I turn my car off. Could this be the alternator?

I would say it's your alternator, have it checked.

Test your voltage regulator as well.

Alright, I'll go get it checked. I just wanted a second opinion before I went through the hassle of getting it checked. I don't know where my voltage regulator is or how to check it but I guess that's why I have an FSM Thanks guys

How detrimental would this be to performance? If I drove it around like this for a while would it **** up anything? My local shop has to order my alternator so it's going to be a little while.I think I might just go with the '97 Quest alternator. It costs about $75 more but I think it would be worth it. Any opinions on that?

Yupp so I put my new quest alternator in. It still does the same thing. Now they just get brighter at like 2500 RPMs.

Well, that's why we told you that it was probably the voltage regulator (at least the people who's knowledge I can vouch for) and to get your alt TESTED. Go replace your voltage regulator.

The voltage regulator is part of the alternator. The alternator was replaced, therefore so was the voltage regulator.

Edit... or at least that's what all the info I've found says. And my alternator was failing anyways. I got it tested, it failed so I bought a new one.

I guess I missed that post where you said you replaced it. I usually overhaul them so thats why I said you should replace the regulator. I should have paid more attention. Still, I would reccommend that you test the regulator on the new alty to be sure and even do a regulator bypass test and compare your readings to specs.
