Lights fail when brights are turned on

I've got a strange issue with my 1984 720 King Cab. With the lights on if I turn on the brights, the lights go off. The fuses are fine, and after a little while the lights can be turned back on. I've also heard a clicking noise intermittently when trying to turn on the lights after this happens (it seems like the sound is coming from the fuse box area).

Any ideas?

Prolly the contacts at the end of the switch stem are oxidized and needs to be taken apart and lightly sanded/cleaned

Those switches are prone to failure after so many years.

Unscrew the switch and clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol and a scrubbing pad.

Turned out to be a bad connection in the plug coming off of the battery terminal. Thanks for the replies.
