I have a 2006 Infiniti M35. I'm in the process of getting a legal - state issued - emergency light/siren permit related to my job (and more so, some volunteer activity). Short of spending $1,000 to 'do it the right way', does anyone have any ideas (or has anyone actually wired up an M35) with this type of equipment? Same concept if anyone is running additional fog/driving lights if that helps ...

Thoughts, help, or direction would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark from Atlanta

Welcome to NICO Mark!

I'm going to move your post to the M35 forum in hopes that you will get an answer specific to the M.

Welcome to NICO, Mark!

Like the other posters, I have no answer either. But, it sure seems like something that I would want to see a picture of, when you are done with it!

I assume you will just have a switch to flip. If that is the case I would run a fused power wire from the batter to a distribution box and run all the lights connections there (along with the switch).

Yes ... yes ... and yes. I will definitely put photos up IF I actually do this.

I would like to have 2 - 3 somewhat hidden switches to control the lights (1 for the front, 1 for the back, and possibly 1 for the sides). I'd like the switches tucked away so they aren't obvious ... and am eyeing up the ash tray/cig lighter area if I can find a switch box that would fit, while still allowing the cover to close (and if I can get the wires in there without taking the entire center console apart). Haven't figured out a good place for siren control ... yet.

And yes, I would most likely run LED's to the front and rear, mostly likely inside the cabin. They have low profile 'sticks' that are about 1x9 inches and would fit nicely in the read deck (or up high on the liner) and up front at the windshield. I'd love to go with wig wags (flashing headlights for those not in the response business) and flashback (alternating brake and reverse lights), but I'm afraid to start messing with the electronics/wiring in this car. It's not as easy as wiring up an 85 Ford Crown Vic ... :-)

I appreciate all the assistance ... and will be checking on some local resources (especially to run the power which scares me the most). If I end up doing this (still need that all important legal permit), I'll be sure to post photos of the final product.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Mark

Our patrol cars don't use the car's headlights for the wig-wags. They actually have a small strobe lights mounted inside each headlight housing. Same with rear flashers. It shouldn't be any different than a Crown Vic in that respect.

If I were you, I wouldn't mess with trying to put in concealed switches everywhere. Just use an all-in-one emergency lighting box like they sell on Galls to run everything (strobes, LEDs, wig-wags, etc) and then branch out your wiring from there. You could just find a convenient place to mount the box and be done with it (like the center console for example).

Just out of curiosity...what type of work and volunteer work are you talking about?

Thanks Tony. I'm looking into the 'all in one' switch box as well ... just not crazy about having it out in the open. I also don't want to get into drilling holes to place remote lights (in head or tail lights) either as I'm afraid of taking the car apart to get to the housing of the lights (especially the front lights with everything going on up there).

I'm with an Auxiliary Police Unit (which is where the permit would come from). Our unit just completed First Responder certification (although I was an EMT for almost 10 years ... almost 10 years ago). The Department is going through a reorganization and being joined with the Fire Department (as a Public Safety Department), so we will probably be called out on a much more frequent basis. As for my professional life, I'm with a Federal Agency in a Terrorism Unit (better know as 'preparedness' these days) - but I'm not in an area that deploys or would actively 'respond' to an incident - especially not in my POV to an incident across country (although a team from my office was deployed to NOLA 2 days following Katrina ...).

Again, thanks for the insight. Assuming you are on the job ... have a safe one out there.

Mark - Interesting project.

I second the suggestion to get with Gall's, and then find out who retros the LE vehicles in your area.

I had my '01 Interceptor "DE-commissioned" at purchase because we ran undercover plates and wanted no external cues.

It was done by a local private shop that had a State contract for installs on all DPS and State Police vehicles.

Whelen makes the 4 head, 6 head, 8 head, and 12 head kits that can all run seperate patterns and are the same ones used in cop cars. Kits start out around 200 bucks wholesale for a 4 head kit with leads and strobes. The installation is the expesive part because your headlights and taillights need to be modified and leads need to be run to all strobes and to the control box. I have done plenty of these and they look dope but be careful where you use them...i have had customers in some deep $hit over some strobes.
