Since i put on my new one peice lighter driveshaft my car seems to have more top speed...i know shes supposed to have more power and it would be in the top end but i can get anywhere from 10kph to 20kph more outta each gear...is this normal or am i imagining this? I havn't driven her in like 6 months so i'm a little unsure...

a lighter drive shaft will not increase your top speed. Physicly, i would imagine that a lighter driveshaft would make the most difference durring its initial rotation. So potentialy better throttle response when in gear and faster acceleration. I dont think a lighter driveshaft would show bigger numbers on a dyno.

Well it doesn't make horsepower, but it does free it up...say two engines make the same crank hp but one has a lighter driveshaft, that one would make more hp at the wheels due to less rotational mass...definatly faster throttle response and acceleration, but didn't expect to get top speed out of it...cool!!!

did you go with the heavy throttle driveshaft? or is it enjuku (are there even any other companies?) ...........

anyways, how is it? would you say its worth it?

There are only two things that can increase top speed

1. Higher gearing2. Bigger Wheels

3. higher redline, but who's counting.

but yes, redline, is it worth the cash?

Oh yeah, good thinking, just whenever a KA is being discussed higher redline is usually dismissed

Both heavy throttle and enjuku got their driveshafts from the same shop, that is before they both discontinued them...

I got it from The Driveshaft Shop, driveshaftshop.com...

Real nice peice, definatly worth the money! I definatly recomend it...

"There are only two things that can increase top speed

...whaaa? where do you figure?

top speed in 95% of production cars is detrmined by drag of the car, or lack of horsepower to overcome the drag at high speeds.

few cars are "gear" or "redline limited" to a speed, notably, ferrari 360 modena is at ~9,000rpm in 6th grear at 176-179mph..THAT is redline limited, not aerodynamically limited.

you can do a few things to increase top speed "higher gearing" only works if your gearing is the problem, and like I said, for most cars it's not the problem at all. your #2 option, bigger wheels does the same thing as number 1, higher effective gearing.

likewise raising the redline only adds top end speed if the redline was the limitation to begin with, and you can make enough power at the new redline to continue to pull the car to it in top gear.

as far as the origional post goes-you're imaginining things.

now back to increasing top speed. since speed is determined in most cars by drag, you can1. decrease drag (wind resistance, etc)2. increase the power to fight the drag of the vehicle(more HP, more top end)

gearing only becomes an issue in cars that have excess HP for the drag they proudce at a given speed, in which case, yes higher gearing, regardless of method will help.

also, for the KA to "redline" higher is not really a valid persuit point, as the power of the ka starts to taper off well before the redline..check my dyno for proof. Increasing the redline will only help, like I said, if yo can suppoer the engine at the RPM you want, higher flowing heads, manifolds and cams would be required for a KA to make any good power above 7000rpm...

*sigh*rant over. -chet

Lower gearing can help too, IF you don't have enough power even in your power band for top speed if the lower gears put the power band in the "right" spot. Just wanted to be dumb...
