My Cig Lighter blows fuses in things I plug into like my GPS phone . Not to long ago I had to take off the connector plug , because it broke when I was doing some work on the radio. I am getting 12 volts to it. But I can't figure out why it would blow a fuse. All of my power cords work great in Saturn VUE . the lighter will work things such as a portable air Compressor . When I looked at the owners manual it said not to use the Cig lighter as a power point. why?
any body have any ideas that could help me out.

Weak wiring between the fuse and the lighter or maybe your GPS phone is drawing more current than the lighter circuit was designed to handle.

Had the same problem with my 91. Terminals in lighter were just too old and rusty. Swapped with new lighter socket, works great. Wired in a multi outlet power point anyway, cause I'm a smoker and want my lighter! Found lots of empty spots in fuse panel to work from.

Yeah when using my lighter it drops the voltage big time so it can handle a pretty good current draw, sounds like wiring or lighter issue, check to see how the connections look and replace with new butt connectors. Lighters draw more current to heat up than any cell phone should, they draw very little current, the batteries in a phone are not even 1 amp. The issue has to be the lighter or the wiring to it.

When I bought my truck, one of the few things that didn't work correctly was the lighter socket. So, as I don't smoke and only use it for power, I decided on an alternate strategy.

I bought an add-on 12v outlet kit from the auto parts store, pulled out the auxiliary/accessory tray below the radio, drilled a couple appropriately sized holes and mounted that guy in there. It lets me keep a charger for my phone and Bluetooth in the car at all times, and a handy place to keep their cords/phone while its charging. Looks factory and I wired them to the ignition circuit so they cant kill the battery while the car is off.

Ill post a pic if anyone is interested. Took an hour or so to do and cost about $12 for parts.

The factory lighter assembly has a u shaped positive terminal for the lighter element. If you do not orient the power plug for adapter properly it will short out and blow the fuse. Just look inside and you will see what I mean.
