Lightening the flywheel?

I am thinking of having my flywheel machined, to make it a little bit lighter. Does any one know if this will throw it out of balance or will I be okay?

yes if done correctly it will still be balanced, but i do not recommend having this done. After market fly wheels are lighter and in most cases thinner then stock, but they are made out of a stronger compound and built to take abuse. Now your factory fly wheel will loose alot of strength once machined thus more set up for failure when pushed hard

I had my OEM flywheel machined. They only shaved off so much, doesn't really make much of a difference. Might as well go with a Fidanza aluminum flywheel instead.

any drawbacks to a lighter flywheel? no turbo, so no issues with spooling down. i was wondering about a fidanza, anything to make the ka want to rev a little more :)-Enzo

should be no probc. just some getting used to, RPM's will drop quickly between shifting gears

I once heard a horror scenario about lightening the stock flywheel and it will make me scared of ever doing that.. An improperly lightened flywheel that might be the smallest bit unbalanced over time could weaken the crank bolts, and at one point in high revs shearing them off, sending the flywheel spinning outward like a saw, cutting off both feet at the ankles....... :(

you lose torque on the launch, it revs out quicker though. I had a Toda lightened flywheel in my CA18DE, it was balless on the launch but would just rap out like a bike on the top end so I tried to pick races on the roll.

I am getting a fidanza aluminum flywheel and a SPEC stage 1 clutch kit this next week sometime and will put it in as soon as possible. I'll let you know what it's like.

You can solve the balancing issue by having the flywheel balanced after it is machined.

If you are referring to making the KA rev higher, the flywheel is not the solution. There are a couple problems with revving a KA higher.

#1, the KA runs into vibration issues somewhere areound 7500 RPM.

#2, the cams are too mild. The VE drops of dramatically at higher RPM's. Especially after 6000 RPM.

There is a difference between making an engine have a higher redline and making it more "rev happy" with better and faster throttle response. I am getting the fidanza flywheel to try and make it more rev happy. It is in the mail right now and I will let ya know as soon as I can get it on.

I've got the fidanza unit and an ACT. Its helped out a lot in revs, but it really picked up once I added the exhaust. Can't wait to put in headers.

If you lighten the flywheel or put a thinner aftermarket one on youll have to replace the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder in time because the thinner flywheel screws up the compression of the master and slave cylinders and they wear out quicker. When i got my clutch they had to take an 1/8 an inch off my flywheel and that happened to me.

yes good point GELLIS a good performance shop will tell you to have this done when putting in a factory flywheel. Most after market flywheels are thinner and have less volume which hence will cause a drop in compression b/c it frees up space.
