I'm still rather new to this car, so answers to these questions are most appreciated:

1) Are the flywheels between the S13 and S14 interchangable? ... In other words can an aftermarket flywheel designed for the S13 fit the S14??

2) What are the pros and cons of running a chromoly flywheel as opposed to the aluminum?

3) Which brand of flywheel would you recommend and why?

Please note, future plans for my KA24DE include turbo. I am looking at clutches right now, either ACT or Clutch Masters.

Thanks!

1) Yes2) Aluminum is more brittle and can't handle as much stress, but is lighter and transfers heat better. Your choice.3) Stillen/Meuller. The Fidanza costs less, but the dowel pins don't line up to the pressure plate correctly, so you need to slot the holes.

Thanks for your reply.

I should clarify my question #1 though ... due to my lack of knowledge about the S13's, am I correct that they had a 2.0 and a 2.4? If so, is the flywheel still interchangable between the 2.0 and 2.4?

I have the S14 (pictured). I see mostly aftermarket flywheels listed for the S13 SR20DET. So, obviously, if the flywheel's are interchangable I wouldn't need to worry about that, right?

Thanks again ... :D

Now you've gotten confused. The SR flywheel will not fit a KA. It is smaller, 210mm vs. 225mm, and is 8 bolt, while the KA is 6 bolt. The SR motor never came to the US in RWD form. The earlier KAs were SOHC, that's the difference. For the KA, your options are:1) JUN chromoly2) Stillen3) Fidanza4) Unorthodox Racing

Yep, I'm confused. Actually a better word is just plain uneducated ;) That's why I appreciate answers such as yours. I am still learning about this car and it's history and I never knew much about the S13's, other than being FWD.

So JUN makes the only cromoly unit for the S14? How much does the stock flywheel weigh anyhow?

Thanks again!

You're killing me. I believe the OE unit weighs about 30 lbs, could be wrong, but it's heavy. I pulled mine off and realized it's weight too late, so I dropped it. Sold it to a loser kid anyway. Jun is the only chromoly unit available, a local here with a KA+T runs it, it's nice but very noisy on startup, the ring gear resonates off the starter for some reason. I've got the Stillen and love it, it was easily a third the weight, and lets the motor rev easily.

I was considering the JUN because of the strength and less likelyhood to warp as compared to the aluminum. I am in the process of working with a local speed shop to turbo my KA24DE, so I would like to upgrade the clutch and flywheel.

However, I realize the aluminum units are lighter but have you or have you heard of any problems with the aluminum units when it comes to high horsepower in the 240?

The estimate for the first stage of my turbo build is no more than 280hp (@wheel), as the bottom end has not been beefed yet. Plans for the built motor will exceed 450 for the daily driver. So I'd like to plan ahead with the clutch/flywheel combo.

I know ACT seems to be the choice around here, however I've had luck with Clutch Masters in the past and my friend's speed shop has used these regularly in their ProFWD Eclipse and street cars. CM's Stage 3 clutch seems good for my application.

So really it's down to the Stillen or JUN flywheel, with obvious differences ... opinions please :D
