im thinking about getting a light weight flywheel. i was just wondering if it is common for them to make a chattering noise?

What do plan do with your lightweight flywheel?

Expect the engine to lug more when you release the clutch when the vehcile is at rest. Otherwise the revs are going to be quick.

About chatter...

Yes...

...and yes.

Any light weight single-mass will be a big switch from the Z's heavy dual-mass flywheel - both in terms of (potential) noise and performance The lighter the flywheel you install the more likely it will be that you hear some chatter. Also keep in mind that the lighter weight will not only wind up faster, but it will also drop rpms faster.

I put in an Exedy lightweight flywheel back in mid-May and have been really happy with it. I need to do a write-up & review about the Exedy bits, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. But a few quick bits...

It weighs in at just under 20lbs (the stock dual-mass is 31lbs). I was tempted to go with the light weight flywheel from Jim Wolf (14lbs), but I was a little concerned that it might be a little too light, and I'm eager to hear Soup's review and opinion of the JWT setup. I also wanted to avoid the possibility (however unlikely) of the ring gear separating from the wheel on the JWT flywheel, that can't happen with the Exedy flywheel since it's a solid piece of cro-moly with the teeth milled out of the billet.

Here's the thing though...the Z isn't a quiet car to start with, I personally don't think that the chatter is noticeable in anything but the lowest speed & ambient noise situations. And it completely changes the behaviour of the car. :yesnod
That's a nice read!

I don't run my car at the strip. If I did I'd put more money in sticky tires instead of a flywheel for time reductions.

But, I drive the 2005 35th Anniversary model...probably the slowest 350Z made thanks to the combination of excess weight (from all the comfort items) and the drop in torque in the RevUp engine. My Z, and in my opinion, no Z's are really about straight line 0-60 or quarter-mile runs, if I wanted that I'd be driving a different car.

For drag, you actually want a heavier flywheel. It'll keep the engine moving with its inertia on a launch. A light weight flywheel will drop the RPMs more quickly, and make you lose launch power.

Who, me? Oh you shouldn't have

The jwt clutch/flywheel combo was a pretty pleasing route to go with. The car remains as livable as it did with the stock components just with a little bit more 'oomph.' People are complaining about the whole idle chatter noise but I can assure you its nothing to worry about when your inside the car..at least for me. If you're one of those people that fear judgmental people will think your car is breaking then you should probably stick with the factory flywheel.

Driving seems to be more crisp when shifting between the gears and pedal play seems to be just about the same as stock, give or take a few micrometers. Although, when the the installation is freshly done the clutch pedal will feel like you are stepping on a raccoon with rigor mortis and the engagement point will be as soon as your foot leaves the floor. Throughout time though it will settle and raise eventually hitting its break in point.

And that's all i got

A+

ACT streetlite here and no complaints. A bit more gear chatter under low acceleration between 1500-2000 rpms and after that just as it was OEM. Idling the chatter is no different than the OEM flywheel and I dropped down to 16.9lbs. The lighter you go the noisier it will become.

Yeah, per tank. Or in other words MPG.

Always been the same since I bought the car. 18-20 in the city and 26-27 on the highway.
