I can open my lifthatch for my Rogue, but it doesn't stay up. I have to have somebody hold it while I load the trunk. Does anyone know what is wrong with it? Is it something I can fix on my own?

thanks

Sounds like the struts - but if it under warranty let Nissan fix it.

Any type of oil or lube applied to the hatch struts can cause the seals to fail and you will lose all the lift power from the struts. Found this one out the hard way.

The only fix is to replace the struts. If the vehicle is still under warranty, take it in and you may get their replacement covered.

Yep... your struts have failed. Actually... almost everyone calls them struts...but Nissan refers to them as "Stays" ...for the purpose of this reply I'll refer the them as struts and or strut supports.

Strut seals wear out over time and the gas charge leaks out. When that happens, trunk lids, hoods and hatches can't support the weight of the glass, liftgate, hatch, trunk, or hood they are designed to open and support. You can always tell if your lift strut supports are not working properly if the part of your vehicle they are supporting requires more than normal effort to lift or won't stay up when opened.

Typically both lift supports are replaced at the same time since its near impossible to tell which one is damaged unless one has had a major seal failure. If the wrong lift support is replaced, your new strut may fail to improve the situation.

Can you fix it on your own? "Yes"... all you should need are some socket wrenches and a phillips screw driver. HOWEVER... the first thing Id do before buying new ones is return it to the dealer and see if it will be fixed under warranty. If not... for instructions on how to replace the struts (stays) go to this link http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Rogue, find your model year... and download the Maintenance Manual. Refer to section DLK page DLK-247 if your Rogue has the Intelligent Key sysem and DLK-434 if it does not.

Here's a link Nissan parts supplier that sells them online... but you may want to shop around for the best price. NET: You need "Strut support, Strut support Left"... and "Strut support Right" ) at $133.50ea. ( Item 10 in the diagram)
