Can anyone help me please. i am having a ticking problem that has been diagnosed as a lifter ticking. I have tried seafoam and zero weight oil and so far nothing. I have taken it to a shop and they have told me it will be 1600 dollars to fix. how hard is it to replace these on your own if you have some mechanical knowledge. and is there any place to find drawings or schematics for the motor. or should i just bite the bullet and let them do the work.

not an easy task to fix these yourself....but if you are willing to give it a shot there is a FSM (factory service manual) in the STICKY section threads

who told you it was a lifter ticking? These engines are prone to have a "tick" but it is normal. If you can post a video of how it sounds we can tell you if its normal

ouch. not a good thing to let your brother drive when he is incompentent. Lots of things it could be - if it is a lifter sticking then its not an easy fix at all. At that point you might as well pull the engine and build it stronger.

what would you do to build it stronger. i mean i know where i want to be with hp overall when im said and done which is 500 or better so i am planning on turbos and stuff but as far as the internals go what would you recomend.

The stock rods are known to be the weak point. There are plenty of aftermarket options that are tough and strong.

Wiseco pistons & Eagle Rods seem to be the most common. I would get the JWT valve springs. L19 headbolts. HR or HKS headgasket. Valve job.
OH, don't forget REVUP oil pump.

If you are gonna build - build it for the future. Stock block is generally known to be safe up to 400whp. Anything more than that and you should build.
