I have noticed that my engine has been making a high speed knocking noise when it is cold. It can be heard both from the outside and inside the car. I popped the hood and the noise is coming from the valvetrain. I don't have a low oil pressure light and when I unscrew the oil cap there appears to be plenty of oil in the top of the engine. Any idea what is going on? Can the valves be adjusted? I have 119,000 miles, running Castrol 10W30 Dino oil.

Thanks!

a trick with the vg motors is to run heavier oil.

like 10w40. it seems to quiet the valve train down

Welcome to NICO!

Its quite possible that your Valve Timing Control Soleniods are done.

Its a fairly common age related failure.

Thank you for the replies. I will try running heavier oil. Where are the valve control solenoids? I wonder if I can change those myself...

The valve control solenoids are pretty labour intensive. You have to be comfortable with taking apart the engine and putting it back together.
